Pledge for Die Cutters

I’m not sure this is the correct procedure to go about this, so please let me know if there is an official procedure.

I would like to make a project that requires a set of die cutters. I was advised to set up a pledge as there may be a few other members interested in the use of one also.

So the die cutters cost £45 see below link:
https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/cht392-6-piece-pipe-threading-kit/?da=1&TC=GS-040210392&gclid=CjwKEAiA6rrBBRDsrLGM4uTPkWASJADnWZQ4e8ehd_zcwzivnHglECxdHVghNkJh3bHbntCOwncPDBoCO8Lw_wcB

Useful for making threads in iron piping. Below are some links to some household possibilities with the cutters. But could be useful for building items in the space as suggested by @joeakins and @stefanoromano. I would like to start the pledge with £10.

Not all of those are threaded pipe - Google Key Clamps as well.

Someone on here recently made a brewing setup out of Key Clamps I recollect.

As we don’t (yet) have @metallictechs some opinions from those with experience would be useful (including, but in no way limited to: @RichM, @frasco, @Barnaby_Coote, @anyoneelsewhohassomethingtoadd)

Psst: if the tools are useful enough to earn a space in the space we can buy them out of existing funds.

Die cutters are a must!

This kit is specifically for pipe threads. Is that a must?

In for a tenner for the pledge

Never ever needed pipe thread dies myself, but I think they fall into the occasional use tools that the Space should have. They won’t take up much space and don’t cost a lot.

So buy them!

If we’re buying dies for pipe cutting then you need a couple of pairs of stilson grips to tighten the joints and some pipe compound.
Do we not also want to look at a general die set with various sizes, not just pipes ?

They are a useful tool that are great to have in the tool box, maybe they won’t be used every single day but its those “damn if only I had this” moment that really makes the difference.

We are a Makerspace so best to have as many tools to enable this  and its not like we are tight for money…

True, a pair of stilsons is always useful and I always use cutting compound when cutting dies or taps.
But for the decorative use proposed by @StudioNelle, perhaps stilson tight joints are overkill.

There is already at least one set of taps and dies in the Space (never sure what belongs to the space and what belongs to @joeatkin2).

I donated a couple of cheap sets to the space. Not sure era arts still there. A Lidl special, and wooden box. Def. not engineering quality

It would be nice to have a proper set of first and second taps and dies like this one

Count me in for £5

Well in that case, I can only match your £5. Particularly since I’ve ordered a set for myself.
Should get it tomorrow. If so I’ll bring it in to show you.

We have a pipe vice somewhere in the space .

If anyone knows where it is this is what it looks like

Hoping it ended up with the metalworking gear? Another of my tiny donations… @frasco?

Could be a blue one on the bottom shelf of the mill/drill bench?

So I think there is a pledge for £30?

@RichM thanks for the key clamp tip. I will look into this also, although the look I wanted was really the gas pipe look for elegance and strength. Would be great to see a pic of the make.

@frasco this for clothing rail rather then a low weight display. Fair few clothes to go so the joins need to be tight. Also want them to be reusable whixh why screwing or clamping mechanism would be great. Is the link you sent a better model then what I sent ? Will this model also cut iron?

I’ve never used a die cutter this big. Would be interested to try it.

The set @frasco linked to is for cutting much smaller threads on solid bar ( and inside holes) Looks like good value for a comprehensive set.
