End grain chopping boards

Tags: #<Tag:0x00007fa497cc07c0>

if you don’t do end grain you can get by with hand plane and chop saw/hand saw which are in the basic tbh! Depending on your starting stock…

I made these and used the planer thicknesser which sped the process up a lot, but in theory possible with hand tools or just the drum sander.

Make square sticks and glue them up, then hand plane that down to flat.

If there is a wood stock buy happening soon though I would be keen to gang up. I’ve been looking at purchasing from Fallen&Feld for a while, would love to do a pick up together or buy together from somewhere else.

I was planning on buying from SL Hardwood as I’ve found for the wood I wanted they were cheaper than Fallen and Felled.

Nice looking Chopping Board there. you are right Face Grain is much easier and you can use the Thicknesser.

I’m looking for about mid-August.

I’m inducted on

  • table saw
  • big CNC
  • band saw
  • planer

Don’t have router, drum sander, or track saw though. Will try to sort out.

Sorry about the silence on this one guys, I’ve made some progress on the test boards today, first glue up

So I’m one more Session away from finishing my test Chopping boards and have myself together enough that we can start talking about creating boards.

I’m goiung to say that we have ~20 clamps in the MakerSpace so this is either going to limit deisgn or amount of people that can do this at once. In one my my glueups I used 16 clamps, but the minimum I think we could use each for this process is 4.

It seems 7 out of 9 people are happy with paying ~£80 for Materials.

For the Design I was thinking of something like

( Walnut and Maple Brick End Grain Cutting Board - Etsy UK) if we do ~ 300 mm x 400 mm x 50 mm I Calculate that to be Approximeatly

~ £45 Plus Shipping

  • 1.4m of 100mm x 50 mm Walnut ( ~ £39 From SL Hardwoods)
  • 500mm of 100mm x 25 mm Maple ( ~£3 From SL Hardwoods)

If we wanted the invese (white big bricks with walnut think pieces) (~£35 plus shipping)

  • 1.4m of 100mm x 50 mm ( ~ £28 From SL Hardwoods)
  • 500mm of 100mm x 25 mm Walnut ( ~£7 From SL Hardwoods)

Please also keep in mind that generally with any wood purchases there is overage and we generally have to buy in 2.4 m lenghts ect.

All of these prices are wihtout shipping, we also need to Add things like

  • SandPaper for the Drum Sanbder
  • Glue (Preferably Titebond 3 for chopping boards)
  • Chopping Board Oil
  • Butchers Block Wax.

The Sessions that would be required would be as follows

  1. Milling and joining the Wood (1st Glue up)
    • Thicknesser
    • Drum Sander
    • Track Saw
  2. Surfacing, Cutting, and Re Glueing the Board (2nd Glue up)
    • Thicknesser
    • Drum Sander
    • Track Saw
  3. Surfacing and finishing the board.
    • Big CNC / Router Sled
    • Drum Sander
    • Track Saw / Thicknesser

Personally these sessions have taken me from 2 hours to 5 hours a Session.

As above I feel that Session should probably have not more than 3 People in them, If we get agreement quickly I might be able to get a Session done before I go on Holidays at the end of August.

Please let me know what everyone is thinking, any feedback is welcome.

Titebond 3 is the best way to go, waterproof and food safe

Might be worth making up one or more of these for clamping, you could use a roll of hard floor protector instead of the tape to stop the glue sticking

it involves dozens of threaded inserts, I’m on board

I may be able to run some sessions next week (5th - 9th) after work if that works for people.

We would want to use this week to order the wood so people/prices would need to be sorted in the next couple of days

I will look to put a price together today so that people can tell me if they are interested or not ASAP.

  • I’m happy with the design above
  • I want wood included in the price
  • I want glue included in the price
  • I want oil included in the price
  • I can make 3 evenings on the week of the 5th of August
  • I want a large (300mm X 400mm X 50mm) board
  • I want a smaller (150 X 200 X 40mm board) board

I’ve done some pricing on the following design

image
395mm x 265mm x 50mm

I’ve calculated that we need

~125mm x 50mm x ~1.5m of Walnut and,
125mm x 25mm x ~750mm of Maple

This course is going to come around £100 per person (shipping is almost £50, I am thinking I could hire a car to collect the wood which would save a little bit, this is also dependant on the wood they have their at the time)

I personally feel this is expensive It could be cheaper depending on stock at the place and any deals we can get, @robchristopher, @Maciej I am willing to run this for you two over the next couple of weeks if you want to go forward with this, I understand if the price is far too high and I can design a smaller/cheaper board if you’de like, I’m keen to arrange for wood sooner rather than later as we need to get wood into the space and ready for you.

please let me know ASAP

Also are either of you inducted on the

  • thicknesses
  • track saw
  • table saw

If not it isn’t a problem, just for my own knowledge as it will be quicker if yau are

Hi

I’m not inducted on any of those bits of kit. I really need to get my act together and arrange for that. I’ve passed the table saw quiz, but to be honest I’d appreciate looking over your shoulder during this process as looking at pics n stuff is one thing - using the gear is another!

I’m in for the £100 - be great experience and I very much appreciate you taking the time to scope this out and organise it!

Excellent,

No need to be inducted, if you are it would Ist mean less explaining required from me.

We still need a second as we need to buy the boards in longer lengths @Maciej are you interested in getting in on this wood purchase? Even if you can’t make all of the sessions next week being able to make some means you can start and we can finish after.

If anyone else in this thread is interested feel free to chime in as well.
