Great, yes potentially I can do an evening with a bit of notice to sort out childcare…What kind of times and dates are you thinking of? Thanks, Anna

@cocciadferro It’s probably easier if I offer a daytime workshop as well as the evening one and others can join when we set a day. If you just vote on the above poll and I’ll count yours as daytime. What times are best for you?

I’d also love to be a part of this, I did the induction for the printer but haven’t used it because I have no idea how to model anything.

Excellent. That’s exactly why I’m doing it. I’m glad my marketing works

Got the magic number of 3 for the Evening workshop so I’ll set it for 1st May (tomorrow) at 7pm if that’s alright with @a.cooke, @JamesHW and @iNerdier?

And the Daytime workshop will be May 3rd at 11am if that’s alright with @cocciadferro? Two more are welcome to join us for the Daytime workshop

Tomorrow evening works for me!

As an update, Autodesk Inventor 2019 certainly appears powerful given the pretty pictures during the install and YouTube videos available.

As such, the learning curve is much steeper than Sketchup and it’s far from intuitive, at least at first. Infuriatingly so at times.

It’s taken me hours to master installation and basic modelling. As opposed to minutes with Sketchup. Autodesk could learn/buy something from them in terms of ‘New User’ friendliness.

On top of that, installation can be a pain and it’s fairly disk space hungry.

I’ll give workshop attendees a demonstration, if I can get it working on a laptop. If not, I’ll play a video or 2 that I’ve found useful.

I just went through the Video suggested by @lewisss above and Fusion 360 is so easy to pickup.
The installation on my laptop didn’t took more than 10min. Seriously thinking of ditching solidworks for the type of usage I do seems more suited to me and so many things that are cumbersome in SW seems to have been made simpler. Let us(me) know how you progressing with inventor.

I’ve been pushing on with Inventor and I’m now fairly accustomed to it’s way of working.

As with most things, easy when you know how.

And as with most powerful software, developed over years, it’s about becoming accustomed to their, often unique, way of working.

I’m sorry I can’t do tomorrow evening as I already had plans for then this week

As it happens I also have something I’d like to attend this evening.

Would Thursday evening be alright for @a.cooke @JamesHW and @iNerdier?

Thursday’s fine with me

I’m sure Fusion is great but I’d rather not be tied to a cloud.

I’ll possibly use it in conjunction with Inventor, which is more than enough for my needs at present.

I was planning to be in on Thursday anyway so it makes no difference to me.

I’m hooked on Autodesk Inventor now.

I’ve completed my first 3D model, as I’d done previously on Sketchup. It is a better quality model and it was easier/faster once I’d learned the basics.

I still think Sketchup is great for your first 3D model or 2 and it’s certainly much more accessible in terms of learning curve and cost of install (disk space and computer specifications).

I’ll aim to do a demo of it during the Sketchup training and will offer a workshop next.

There’s a 30 day trial and you can probably get a 3 year educational license.

It does require a fairly modern PC or Mac with at least 6.2gb free hard disk space and probably 8gb ram

I’ve successfully registered and activated as an educational user using another computer.

So, my offline design machine has a fully working (registered & activated) installation of Inventor Pro 2019 with a 3 year educational license

Yes that’s fine with me for 3rd may; do we just need to bring laptop with sketchup?

Many thanks, Anna

Excellent. What time?

Preferably:

  • laptop;
  • Sketchup installed (although I can assist if anyone has issues);
  • an idea or paper sketch of a fairly basic 3D model you’d like to create or you can copy someone else’s if you can’t think of anything yet.
With as many known measurements as possible

Great. You mentioned 11am which is fine for me, but if another time suits better I can do any time between 9am and 3.30.

Hi !! That seems amazing I am available evenings normally. I can make it some nights of next week. If it is suitable for you. Let me know what dates you have planed and I can look up on my rota when I have a bit of free time.

Kind regards
Angela
