Basic 3D Sketchup workshop offered for 3D modelling/printing and maybe 2D/laser cutting?

I’m sure we can squeeze you in if you can make This Thursday evening 3rd May at 7pm?

9am is good for me if the space is open? Is there any way we can check or find out when a shutter access person will be around?

Not sure on that front but 9 am great for me.

Absolutely, this Thursday would be perfect. What would I need to bring, do etc for that date?
Thank you so much

Preferably

This is great to see members getting together to share skills and develop new ones

It’s worth reiterating that SketchUp is an excellent visual 3d modelling tool: you can build objects quickly, and it’s terrific for architectural models – but most of us would steer well away from it for 3d printing: you need to be very methodical to avoid horrendous pitfalls, in my experience, for anything apart from very simple forms

For laser cutting Inkscape is your best bet: open source, free, powerful and loads of tutorials – it’s the staple of Maker/HackerSpaces

Regarding Autodesk Inventor: at £2166 per year it’s no doubt excellent, but out of reach of most of us. And we can’t endorse signing up for educational licences, though it’s of course up to individuals what they do

Apologies for sounding negative guys: SketchUp is fun and fast, and great at what it’s great at

I’d really recommend dipping your toes in Fusion360 if you want to create models to print/CNC, or prototype furniture, mechanisms, robots or rocket engines – okay, the last one might be stretching it a bit…

Here’s some SketchUpping I did some years back in a past life designing gardens for people with too much cash (note: it was run through a third-party rendering software)

I’ve taken the knowledgeable advice on board and this is really just a 3D taster session to get people interested/started/familiar with the concepts.

I’ll certainly make this very clear to participants and point them to Fusion and/or Inkscape as you suggest.

AFAIK I didn’t give any false information to get an educational license. I just ticked that I was a student and/or educator, which I am. They didn’t ask for any further information eg. institution, job or course. And I’m certainly not suggesting anyone lie to get one

Inventor LT is only £438 a year

Is that per machine or per user?

Perhaps something an upmarket or larger makerspace could afford?

Actually as everyone has said, Fusion is the way to go, especially if you don’t mind being tied to a cloud.

I’ve just been informed that Thursday evening is electronics night so we might have to rearrange.

I’ll make further enquiries as to when is best.

The Thursday morning workshop is still on atm so I should know more after that.

Amazing pictures from Sketchup, especially the material on the long chair in the first one.

We’ll have to rearrange the evening workshop as it clashes with electronics night and emf festival activities.

I’ll setup a Doodlepoll later today to find another date

Usually there’s enough space on a Thursday even with electronics but yes if there’s also EMF afoot we might have to find another day.

Maybe next Thursday then?

Might as well do it on a non-clashing day anyway if we’re rescheduling? I was thinking about just attempting it today and fleeing if there ends up being too many people there.

I don’t know how to determine that, as I’m told there’s no booking system.

Basically not thursdays are free but there is a calendar on the top right corner.

Thanks.

So it’ll have to be a Monday, Tuesday or Friday evening except 29th

Thank you very much Robert.

Shall we meet at 9am at the space and go elsewhere if it’s not open? Is there a library nearby? Or make it later to increase the chances?

Yes great. I live 10 mins walk away so that’s an option …
