Wood Lathe tool control

Hi @Kyle, @Scythian,

I need your help, please

Could you set up the software for using tool control on the wood lathe? Nii has showed me that there’s an old tool control assembled and ready to use, he can set up new devices but he doesn’t know how to set up the old ones… @joeatkin2 has kindly agreed to handle the cabling, taking the cable from the table saw tool control and connecting it to the lathe.

All inducted wood lathe members should already be in the tool control group, so this should be possible :raised_hands:.

Let me know if you need any more details. Thank you all so much.

Heya,

We would like to only use new ones from here on out, whats the reason to use an old one?

Thanks!!

We are connecting to wood shop and Ni @sdsefwseghtqfg thinks the new proxy isn’t ready so apparently this is the only way to do it. I’m not opinionated about it but i don’t want to lost momentum :grinning: @asander1 @Kyle let me know what is next and how I can help to keep this rolling

The proxy is designed to be completely transparent by design and has been for years

Also, why is it connecting to the woodshop?

For power. That part makes sense to me.

Its only lost momentum for like 3-5 years, what could go wrong! :joy:

ok initial use cases to move forward with new proxy :

Workshop Area Power Activation

  • A **wood lathe user ** taps the wood workshop area tool control to enable power for the entire workshop.
  • The user must belong to the Wood Workshop Inducted Tool Control Group to perform this action.

Wood Lathe Power Activation & Login

  • Any wood lathe user taps the wood lathe tool control to log in.
  • Power is supplied to the lathe.
  • The tool control display shows the user’s username.
  • The user must belong to Wood Lathe L1, L2, or L3 Tool Control Group to perform this action.

Wood Lathe Power Deactivation & Logout

  • Any user taps the wood lathe tool control a second time to log out.
  • Power to the lathe is disabled.
  • The tool control display shows the message: “Please tap here to use the tool.”
  • Any SLMS user can perform this action.

Am I missing any other cases ?

From purely a perspective of logic I think the only problem is here.

To log out of a tool there should be no need to be inducted on the tool.

Say that Joe public is lockin up for the night and finds the lathe to be still logged in into someone, Joe public should be able to log the lathe out even if he has never been inducted on it.

If as you said the only way to log out is to be inducted, then this would create problems.

Goes without saying that if Joe public tries to then log back IN to the tool, the system should not allow him…

I may be wrong but this makes sense to me…

@Kyle I’m not able to design cabling schematic… but we will probably get low voltage from the table saw tool control, we have spare cable in the space. Main switch box to connect to tool control box and provide power to the lathe is ready (sorry no idea of naming :fearful:).

You are absolutely right. Updating the specs.

The logic of the tool control system in woodworking is all depends on the local proxy running on the pi at arch2 instead each individual nodes.

This should be acting like that, if the current proxy is running on the way you were describing?

That is the part i am not sure about…

Following this, there is also a logic I’m not aware: wood lathe tool control is login, any user taps to logout in the wood workshop tool control… will wood lathe tool control log out too?

The current behavior proxy just sits in the middle and listens for tools being opened or closed. It just replicates that state to the modbus.

Here’s the code that was flashed to the woodshop nodes: https://github.com/southlondonmakerspace/ToolControlMarkIII/blob/useproxy/src/main.cpp

@dario - this is a planned feature but is not currently present. I think max was the last one to pick that up. Can we confirm that we’re happy for it to work the same as the woodshop tools (i.e. get upgraded as that goes in place)?

Can someone provide the modbus channel for the woodlathe? I can add that to the proxy config before the rewire happens.

The remnant URLs on this code were a bit confusing, I will test it next time I come. Hope the update can be done by the weekend.

Absolutely.

https://southlondonmakerspace.org/wp-json/SLMS/v1/groups has the group ids @sdsefwseghtqfg

Before we start relying on the proxy can someone migrate it to something reliable that’s not also running a file server and has the default password on it.

Also can all new devices use the SLMS Infrastructure SSID/VLAN if on Ethernet.

All woodshop has run on it for a couple years now. Happy to continue to support efforts for a language swap and making it a dedicated device.
