Temporary photographic studio

Has cables and don’t need stands, as permanent installation . So we need one unbrels

And I am just demonstrating what is available

Yeah something along these lines I guess, like I say I can share what I’ve seen at work but not much hands on experience. I can borrow some from work for an evening sometime abs we can pay around see what results we get.

Soft boxes aren’t really that great, no one uses them for still life anyway. We can use bounce cards or acrylic. That’s £10 spent instead of £350.

We should clamp them to the ceiliing gantry with super clamps. About £60 for a pair with spigots. Or maybe we can fashion a fixture. No need for stands.

A sync cable is about £5 but i’m sure someone can arduino a radio sync and save us the £300 it would cost for a retail one.

Are the two lamps I found any good?

If so why not grab them ?

400J is more than enough yes
They also have bowl reflectors which is good. You often have to pay extra for those and you need them

I wouldn’t bother with umbrellas, not very versatile

@directors

Do we have a plan ?

But easy to store and because it’s reflex adds length. I think that the front light shood be on a umbrella

Sounds like some very good solutions here: great to see the knowledge members have!

@members Has anyone got any objections to there being a temporary photographic studio for capturing images of members’ projects? This should make it easy to get above average quality effectively lit images, for blogs, Tweets, FB, Instagram, Pinterest, Etsy, Myspace (?), Twitter etc

At the moment I understand the proposal is for this to take place in the social area. If this turns out to be too disruptive to the social area then it would need to find a new home.

If you have any objections please comment in this thread.

It might be useful for the people proposing this to summarise the current best options, including: what’s it’s for and not for, the m2 of floor space it would need, what kind of budget we are looking at, etc.

For me it’s a yes, as long as:

  • it’s simple to set up, use, and put away
  • it’s installed with design values in keeping with the clean room, I.E. it still looks good when not in use
  • we don’t have major objections from members (location seems to be the main point of contention)
  • directors agree
    -directors approve budget

I agree with Dermot.

Are those flash heads in budget ?

If so @pip @Barnaby_Coote should we buy them , past experience tells me we need to move fast for ebay

2sq m of floor space when up zero when down.

For taking fantastic photos of stuff you make

About 300 quI’d budget

Might be more if @directors don’t move fast

I’m for it, a setup could be quite handy for photo projects

I’m not sure where the electronics benches are going. If they are side by side on the south wall then that leaves the space between the door into messy and the fire exit from dusty.

A back drop roller and lights could be fixed on that wall?

Just a suggestion.

I think that is going to be storage and printer place

Following the last meeting I volunteered to research some affordable photography kit options. We discussed a large option and a small option with a budget of approx £150. If We decided on a large studio kit + small kit + tripod + paper we are well over the budget, but we can omit the added extra’s to stay roughly on budget See below some inexpensive options:

Large kits:

3375w softbox, boom arm and 4 backdrops £146

540w softbox and umbrellas 3 backdrops £120.99

2000w softbox lights 3 backdrops £99.99

Smaller kits:

Studio Tent with lights and backdrop £44.95

Portable Photo Home Studio inc. 4 colour Background, Tent, Tripod, 2 Lamps & Soft Carry Bag £34.33

Nice Extra’s:

Basic tripods;

Backdrop paper

I recently got to try out a nice new toy - remote phospher lights ! These are amazing. Super lightweight, super bright, a color rendering index of 90+ and no heat at all.

The way they work is with blue LEDs that provide energy to a special phosphorescent sheet (looks like acrylic). The sheet gets lit pretty uniformly and provides a really nice light source. The profile is so small you can build them into pretty much anything.

Fully assembled lights are fairly pricey on their own but you can buy the sheets seperately from intematix for pretty cheap. I’d love to have a go at DIYing a panel if for our proposed studio if someone can give me a hand sourcing the right LEDs and getting the wiring right!

Anyone interested in giving this a go?

did we buy one of these in the end?

No, and we said we would. Let’s fix that!

The delivery will be quite bulky so I can’t take it at home or work. Can anyone volunteer to have it delivered?

If its delivered to Somerset House I can bring down in two trips.
