Spraying Paint

Perhaps a couple of silly questions:

  • is the area behind the metal shop bordered by rubber curtains a ‘dirty’ area appropriate for painting? (I think I had just assumed this previously given its appearance)
  • if so, does this have extraction appropriate for spray painting (with a compressed air gun)?
  • if not what are the policies about spraying outside?
  • would the compressed air lines stretch outside?

I’d be very happy to buy a compressed air spray gun and leave for the space, I just want to check it’s doable!

Many thanks

Felix

Good timing for this question - I’m not 100% sure about the existing area at the back of arch 1, but we’re currently in the process of building a dedicated spray booth - concrete for it should be going in on Saturday

Hi all, this comes up often…

Here is the current answer:

To sum up:

  • We don’t have a proper spray booth
  • But you can spray small stuff in the wash down booth in messy room with:
  • You can paint outside with FFP3 mask away from the doors and don’t block vehicle access or get paint on any cars / storage containers

Andy

Brill thank you both. It’s for some larger objects so I’ll look at doing it outside for the meantime!

Cheers

As long as it would be ok to run the compressed air line out of arch 2? I would ask someone to be there to spot me so that I don’t garotte anyone! And that the door doesn’t close on the line

Should be fine, leave the arch 2 door cracked open…

@felixhj @Sean I have a vested interest in spaying aerosols, happy to pitch in to help the project progress where needed - Could we build our own spray booth maybe?

Hi all,

Sorry to be the boring safety guy, but can the those that are excited about spraying write up a Risk Assessment for the activity in the Space? Before we build or buy anything we need to know what we actually need to do it safely…

Let me know who will take this on and I can give access to the category here on Discourse…

Thanks!!
Andy

Hi Dorine,

That’s great, we always need more members happy to pitch in

Spray booth is kind of entangled in the current metalwork-ceramics-extraction project, essentially we need a way to vent large amounts of air out of the front of the space so we can avoid filling it with welding fumes (and aerosols from spraying)

It’s currently being worked on quite actively, there’s just a lot to consider with existing extraction and fire detection systems in the woodshop which we don’t want to break in the process. I took some measurements yesterday, so I’ll be posting a 3d model of the top of the arch to help with figuring out the duct paths we’ll need

I can volunteer for it if that’s ok and no one else wants to do it that’s been here longer?

Yes please! No need for experience at the Space, just look at the examples and ask any questions! Thanks!

Perfect!

Hi all, just seeing what’s the status on this, I’m a new member and would be interested in helping getting a spray station going.
Alternatively is there a designated painting station at the space where a relatively large project can be painted using rollers etc?
