Space Use Survey 2017 (Step 1 of 2)

I think these are two differ t things in practice. CNC mill and CNC router are in my opinion quite different tools with exclusive use cases.

Hinge pins, stub axles, fittings for aluminium tubes into furniture and cd racks. Drive pinions for electric racing go carts (maybe a bit specialist…)

Interesting. Well, my general position is CNC all the things =]

Of course, it could just have reflected the interests of the HoD…

Plus it’s much easier to program a CNC lathe so it was probably just more accessible.

If it’s okay with you I’m not going to add Lego / Meccano if that’s okay as there are already a lot of options and I don’t think this requires a huge space dedicated to it if we did put a pledge together for it.

Dark room is already in the original list from 2015.

No problem.

Okay so i’m drawing a line in the sand there on suggestions as we’ve got plenty now to be getting on with, the following is the raw list:

  • Textiles
  • Vinyl cutting
  • Large Format Printing
  • Electronics
  • 3D printing
  • Metal work
  • General assembly area
  • Casting (From Moulds)
  • Bicycle Maintenance
  • Screen printing
  • Laser cutting
  • Wood work (inc. Lathe)
  • Storage
  • Dark Room
  • Ceramics
  • Plants & Growing Things
  • Vacuum Forming
  • Welding bay
  • Letterpress
  • Forge
  • Desktop CNC
  • CNC mill
  • CNC lathe
  • Large sheet CNC
  • Paint/spray booth
  • Hand tool woodworking
  • Experimental kitchen
  • Brazing/soldering
  • Metal casting (Jewlery)
  • Metal plating / anodising / coating
  • PCB etching
  • Sandblaster
  • Sheet metal working area
  • Ceramics area
  • Concrete casting
  • Materials library
  • Darkroom
  • Vehicle maintenance

I’m going to start compiling this into a more concise list, for example ceramics area instead of kiln, potters wheel, etc…

Thanks Tom.

This is how I propose the survey goes out to members, and that we set the closing date to September 19th, to allow a week to process the results for the next members meeting.

Space Survey 2017

It’s been almost exactly two years since the last space survey, and following the August members meeting it was agreed to run an updated survey to collect data about what activities members are most interested in using.

The deadline for completion is: 23:59 on Tuesday, 19th September 2017, the results should be published at the next members meeting on Tuesday, 26th September 2017.

To take part you must be a active member and for identification purposes you will need to provide your Discourse username so we can check for repeated entries.

Discourse username: _____________

Survey

Each of the following questions asks you to grade from 1 to 5 how important each area or activity is to you as a member, where 1 is the least important and 5 is the most important.

This survey is for informational purposes only, they data could be used in future proposals to change or increase the use of space, however that is not a direct outcome of this survey.

Part 1: Existing areas + activities

This part of the survey asks you to grade the importance of many of the existing areas and activities related to making.

  • Storage
  • Wood workshop
  • Textiles area
  • Electronics benches
  • Metal work
  • General assembly area
  • Photographic studio
  • Bicycle Maintenance
  • Screen printing
  • Laser cutting
  • 3D printing
  • Vinyl cutting
  • Large Format Printing
  • Casting (from Moulds)

Do you have any constructive comments you’d like to provide about the existing facilities:

Part 2: New areas

The following is a list of areas and activites compiled from a call for suggestions and the 2015 space use survey.

  • Materials library
  • Darkroom
  • Letterpress
  • Experimental growing plants
  • Experimental kitchen
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Paint/spray booth
  • Sandblasting
  • Vacuum Forming

Some areas we’ve broken down into sub sections with specific activities:

CNC

  • Desktop CNC
  • CNC mill
  • CNC lathe
  • Large sheet CNC

Metal working

  • Welding bay (non-flammable gas)
  • Forge
  • Brazing/soldering
  • Sheet metal working area
  • Metal plating / anodising / coating
  • Metal casting (jewellery)

Ceramics area

  • General ceramics area (kiln + pottery wheel)
  • Concrete casting
  • Ceramic 3D printer

At this stage you are welcome to add suggestions to the list for activities not listed here that you would like to see:

@directors I’d like to move forward with publishing this survey to the membership ASAP to allow the maximum time for people to reply, could you create an empty Google Form and share editing permissions with me@unknowndomain.co.uk.

Welding bay (non-gas)

I don’t understand why this is specifically mentioned - gasless welding strikes me as particularly poorly suited to the space and mig/tig being much more useful and easier. Unless you meant not flammable gases?

I meant non flammable, yes, sorry about that, I’ve corrected it.

Sorry Tom, maybe is the case of specify this a a motorcycle maintenance (if this is the one that come from my suggestion) because my recollections is that our lease forbid car maintenance in there? If I’m wrong just ignore me

It’s only the directors that decided that, I don’t recall t being against our contract, it also isn’t saying Makerspace is going to do it. This is just to help us understand what people are interested in.

Oh, ok cool then…

I’m just trying to minimise the number of areas people have to vote on. Should it turn out to be popular and we have space in future then we can put together a group to see how that might work more practically.

I was thinking he point of this survey is informational, for any future expansion off site even.

However if we go that route then we should add gas welding so perhaps we remove vehicle repair entirely.

Thoughts?

There’s an argument that amateur repairs wouldn’t fall under the ‘motor trade’ heading…?
