Space Use Survey 2017 (Step 1 of 2)

How about a drawing board draft table thing for designing/ sketching and inking/ artwork etc. Not sure how popular but might be worth adding to the list to see.
Also clay sculpting.

^ clay sculpting :+1: always fancied a bash at that

GFRC concrete casting / spraying area (uses the air compressor and drywall hopper to spray concrete into a mould)

@Dermot yes free space for assembly is vital, I’m not the only to use it!

That was not in doubt with me, just wanted to check it wasn’t blocked with other stuff. Existing activities are not up for negotiation!

Last chance to get your suggestions in this closes this weekend!

This is the list of suggestions unedited so far:

  • Welding bay
  • Letter press
  • Forge
  • Large CNC router
  • CNC lathe
  • CNC mill
  • Desktop CNC
  • Paint booth
  • Spray booth
  • Sandblaster
  • Hand tool wood working
  • Experimental kitchen
  • Brazing / Soldering
  • Metal Casting (Jewlery)
  • Metal plating / Annodising / Coating
  • Sheet metal working
  • Drawing area
  • Clay sculpting
  • Concrete casting + spraying

Question for people here to help with:

  • There are four types of CNC listed, and I’m not clear that there is something a desktop CNC can do that a CNC mill cannot do?

Desktop cnc - could well be bigger cut area than a mill as these tend to be small relative to their overall footprint. Also desktop cnc prob has a higher max spindle speed (not always a good thing but may be useful sometimes) than a mill.

Nice compiling!

A desktop CNC would seem to me to be a small CNC router?

Yes, but possibly more rigid structurally so better able to machine aluminium.

I mean for the purpose of this survey do we just put CNC router

I think there are three categories for a CNC mill/router/cartesian-something we should be thinking of.

  • A big (furniture size)router for sheets of wood.
  • A small router for blocks of aluminium.
  • A small mill for foam with a cube volume rather than the 2.5D of the above.

Then there’s 5-axis, mill turn, etc. but that’s a bit ahead of ourselves.

That’s what I’d put in the survey. Not sure what consensus will be.

And the Lathe?

Dunno. I limited that to cartesian style CNC. Personally, I’m happy with a manual metal-class lathe.

Not to be difficult - but a mill is much better suited to cutting blocks of aluminium than a router. Router would be alright with sheet material though.

Basically need someone to help me decide what to write in the survey

When I was head of DT the CNC lathe got far more use than either the CNC router or CNC mill.

  • materials library
  • Lego and Meccano – useful prototyping and crative tools!
  • potters wheel
  • kiln for ceramics
  • 3d printer for ceramics
  • darkroom

I was trying to be agnostic on what exactly they were called. I don’t think there’s enough clarity between what the difference is in folk knowledge, the basic conceit is a spindle on a 2.5D chassis

Interesting. What things were made? My wants are for random mechanical parts, especially plates to join X to Y.

Space for welding and melting metals. Or otherwise known as ‘fire and plasma room’
