Mechanical Movement for Automata by 'Nunhead Tim' Stevenson

Hi everyone,

Following a hugely positive response to the initial post COURSE: Mechanical Movement for Automata by ‘Nunhead Tim’ Stevenson, we now have dates in mind to accommodate two Groups for a 2-part course, with the potential for project-oriented part 3’s to be organised down the line.

At the bottom of this post, you can throw your name into the hats for the chance to participate, but please take a moment to read this key information first (with more detail in the initial post linked above).

Overview:

A hands-on introduction to mechanical movements of different kinds, from automata maker and educator ‘Nunhead Tim’ Stevenson. All materials for the mechanism will be supplied, and you will go away with a simple hand-cranked mechanism which can be used as a basis for an automaton of your own. More info about Tim and the Course here.

The course will be split into two parts taking place on two separate days, with the possibility of a Part 3 added if desired:

  • Part 1: Cams - the rotating cog or otherwise that translates the form of movement
  • Part 2: Linkages - the connecting links and joints to transmit force
  • Part 3 (tbc): Project support, with Tim offering advice on any planned or initiated projects

Dates

  • February Group: Part 1, Sunday 15th; Part 2, Sunday 22nd Feb, 2 - 5pm
  • March Group: Part 1, Sunday 15th; Part 2, Sunday 22nd March, 2 - 5pm

Course details

  • Clean room table
  • SLMS members only
  • 3 hours (with possible overrun if needed)
  • Practical, with demonstrations/discussions
  • Take home the kit afterwards
  • Cost: Kit (£7.50) plus facilitator fee (recommended donation £10-£15)
  • Small group (max 8 people)

How to participate

7 names will be drawn at random from under the names of the Group host in each Group List below, with names announced on Tuesday 10th, 8pm. You can put your name down under the February Group, the March Group, or both if you are available for both and want to maximise your chances of participating this time. Just edit the post and add your username somewhere under mine and Lia’s, who will be supporting Tim where necessary.

Thanks Marc! In the diary.

Awesome! Cheers, Marc!

Excited! Thank you for organising. Just want to check if we can pay on the day by transfer or best to bring cash?

Hi Hannah, checked with Tim and he says cash would be better if possible. Thanks for asking

Thanks Brendon! He’s up for it, saying lets go for it in March when you are around. If the kit is readily available I’d mention it in case he wants to also try this weekend, but definitely no need to do anything towards that idea, he’s probably happy as is

Hello all,
I’m really sorry but I made a mistake when looking at the calendar :person_facepalming:

I’m actually not available on March 15th

Would you be able to give my spot to someone else please?

I’m sorry

If the replacement is randomised again could I maybe put my name into the random draw as well pleaseee
No worries if not, I forgot to check discourse for a while so will wait for the next one! Thank youu :folded_hands:

Following dmagliola’s withdrawal, I’ve made the draw again amongst the 4 names that were in there ahead of the timeline I had initially given - apologies to @Immanuel and @nishasdk, but good to have your interest if there’s to be another.

And the spare place, it goes to…

@Beccaartist !
