Make the Space - Sunday 22nd November 11AM

That sounds great, I’m happy to come and be a laborour two or three days that week.At the moment I can do any days. I’m sure there would be more weekday volunteers if you will be there all week as foreman! I

I’m on the mobile today if anything I can help with.

Or message me on slack or email.

Dermot

If you do decide to make concrete today, and there isn’t enough to match the dimension on the drawing, then lower it in increments of 110mm. All we really need is a level surface to lay blocks on.

The concrete footing won’t be poured today, that’s a bit over-ambitious as we do not have the materials or personnel.

There are just three of us (Matt, Jan, and myself). We have cleared space for the footing, are making a former, bonding the floor with PVA and Matt might be doing a tip run later.

What is the point on the back wall where the lengthwise block wall is supposed to meet it? Or is it safe to assume that the lengthwise wall will be exactly square to the phase I flooring? We need to know the angle for the footing former and I thought it might be unsafe to assume everything is square on account of the skewness of the arch.

Also, we discussed via phone with Dermot, and we were going to put a small gap (the thickness of a plank of wood) between the concrete footing for the block wall and the footing for the phase I floor. This serves two purposes: it allows us to build a wood former for the concrete, and it enables acoustic isolation between phase I and the dusty workshop (which Dermot mentioned). Would this foul up the plans at all? I notice that the plan you produced shows the new concrete footing abutting directly up to the footing for the existing flooring.

Right angles to the phase 1 floor please. We hit the back wall wherever we hit it.

Gap is fine by me

At 245mm from the top surface of existing phase I flooring (as per drawing) the concrete footing is only going to be 85mm tall as the flooring is 330mm above the concrete.

Ah, then I was right first time

We built part of a forner for the concrete footing.

It is bolted to the floor at one end. We tried to put more bolts in, but the little Hitachi drills were just not up to the job, so the rest is propped up with blocks.

The depth of the former is greater than the required depth of concrete. I hope the plan was not to be able to scrape the excess off the top of the former to get it exactly level, which would be very difficult given the uneven floor.

There are two cable routes out of phase I under the flooring, however, which would appear to be something that needs thinking about. I don’t know if we can just have two six-inch airgaps, instead of one to get around it. The concrete floor near to the soakway has a chunk missing and so is a really long way from level.

We did not get around to bonding the floor either due to time constraints.

Tip run too.

Yes, Toby came by and took away the majority of the rubbish that was being stored in the “clean” area.

Great start folks, whos up for a bit of work this evening?

To fill this formwork to the correct level we’ll need about 0.1m³ of concrete. Do we have enough sand cement & ballast?

I’ll try to make it along for a couple hours

By my calculation the single 25kg bag that Dermot left is enough cement for a mix to fill the trough to the desired level. I don’t know about the supplies of sand and ballast though.

I will be available from 19:30-20:00, if yu think I could help on anything?

Thanks

Ana

1:3:6 (volume) ratio for foundations. To make .1m³ that’s
20kg cement
40litres sand
80litres ballast

There should be loads of sand left in the big bag, and I have a memory of seeing three bags of ballast, but not recently…

I’ll be in from 6.30-ish!

I’ll be in tomorrow. If they’re is work going on I could help.

The former needs to be finished, by extending it into the soakway, which is the tricky bit. It probably needs an airgap at each of the two cable routes out of phase I. The floor needs bonding prior to the pouring of the concrete, and the concrete close to the soakway may need cleaning first (ie before fixing the former in place).
