Industrial singer sowing machine up for grabs

if its not of use to slms I would probably be interested either for myself or another space

Also just a suggestion, if the space thinks we need an extra sewing machine maybe we relocate the pc which is probably not used for sewing and the table and optimize this space for more sewing by moving the sewing machine and table in this space.

I think an industrial sewing machine would be great for the space. They are good for sewing leather and other heavier materials on. I can see the benefit of keeping it.

I agree about having something that can do more heavy duty materials but we do have a lot of them at the moment and a few are in questionable working states. Could we / the textile techs maybe work out if we need all of them or if we could at least make sure they all actually work.

I also don’t entirely understand why there’s a PC in the sewing corner either, I always have to stash its parts away when I want to use a machine

The Bernina and the two Janomes belong to the Space. Other machines have just appeared…

I think two are mine which will endeavour to remove from the space/working in making space for them. I originally bought them in to run seeing sessions at the space and have multiple seeing machines.

we might need an ‘industrial’ machine but what does that really mean? Heavy, dual needle, embroidery for example I am thinking of buying my own machine for free motion embroidery, specifically for ‘drawing with stitches’ to make artisan kites with, and I have not yet acquired the knack of getting free donations for makerspace, the one I have seen could set me back £300!

I am trying to research sewing machines in general, it is quite a lot to read up on and suspect our Janome is quite a good all-round machine, are we looking for a more powerful engine?

I believe that significant work is ongoing on refurbishing the machine at the space

My janome has seriously struggled on some of the bags I’ve made.
Bought one down to run through the singer and it breezed through about 8 layers of fabric at near a meter a second.

That machine is fantastic and a great addition to the space.
It has found a home here and is extremely happy.

the one that got away but actually found a better home (chuckle)

Im glad we are keeping this wonderful machine , It will make a great harness system (rig ) for one of my current monster projects that will be made out of leather straps it will do most leather work and heavy duty cloth

We haven’t made a decision on it yet…

Please keep it as it’s very useful to stitch very thick/tough materials. Maybe for the boat race?

This machine is 10000% a keeper.

The speed, power, sensitivity and response of this machine is in a complete different league to the domestic machines.

Could it work for shoe making and repairs?

That’s good. Which machine is being refurbed? Maybe we could list types of job and link them to machines so that we can be precise in showing members the bias of each machine?

I agree that we should totally keep this machine! I just repaired a canvas sail bag and sewed the handles on again with very little effort - like 4 layers of thick material.

If you want to make or repair sturdy stuff this is the machine to do it!

This has been in the space, had a singer specialist fixing it, members having a go at fixing it and still isn’t working well according to @asander1, would we consider 1)having a look at it again and finding out why it’s not working and/ or 2) donating it on ?

The precious space could be used for other tools (like the printer in the social are for example).

It is true, it doesn’t work properly right now, it needs to be retimed I think. When the Singer specialist came it was missing parts (lost), it is now complete and I timed it but it needs more love.

Rumour has it @Jack_MH has another industrial sewing machine? Let’s start there and see if we have a better replacement before messing with it.

Yes, the industrial machine is with Jack, and properly robust and a beast by all accounts, needs Avan to transport to SLMS (which I’ve said I’ll do)
