Free IoT workshop day Saturday 30th January 2016

As mentioned on this previous thread: Do we want a free Internet of Things workshop day?

Greg has offered a free tryout to SLMS members of his IoT course.

This is part of our original vision to hold regular talks and workshops in the space.

IoT is an area that’s poorly served by courses and training in the UK, and Greg is hoping to fill that void with a reasonably priced solution pitched at makers and young IT professionals. This time round the reasonable price is £0.00!

It will be from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday 30th January 2016, including a break for lunch. As with previous free workshops we encourage attendees to bring some ‘sharing food/drink’

Here’s an overview:

"The workshop is intended to provide enough skills and knowledge for beginners with no prior experience to embark on a simple IoT project. The ‘ideal’ candidate may be a young professional with little time wanting to expand their horizon, for instance a web developer.

Goals:

  • attendees learn what IoT is, where and how it is applied in real life (healthcare, energy, transport, homes, etc.), basic figures such as the size of the market and predicted global revenue, potential problems (security, privacy, etc.), devices and platforms similar to the Particle Photon (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Beagleboard, ESP8622, Electric Imp, etc.), significant players in the industry (Apple, Google, CISCO, Samsung, IBM, etc.), trends

  • attendees have a thorough understanding of how IoT works/ what layers it comprises of

  • attendees able to realise a simple project, such as getting a buzzer alert when they get a new email or control a servo with a web app

  • using the written resources provided, attendees able to learn IoT related subjects by themselves Javascript/JSON or electronics and debug their own code"

All materials will be provided, but please bring a laptop!

There are only ten places available.

So, a reasonably fair approach is that I list the members who showed an interest on the original thread and give a week for them to confirm attendance/non-attendance. Please add your name to the bottom of the list or add it to the waiting list if you want to attend and we’ll move them up as spaces become available. I’ll go through the list on 17th Jan and tidy/remove anyone who hasn’t responded.

Waiting list:

I’d love to come but have a gig that day. If there’s ever the option in the future on a not a Saturday I’d be up for it. Else I’m going to bug those of you that did come for the info

I have a farmer’s market to go to :frowning:

I keep editing the Wiki to confirm my attendence, and the tick appears after my name momentarily and then is gone.

Hmm. Try again. an editing clash?

The tick seems to be lingering now…for now.

What happens if two people are editing at the same time?

What?

Delete… it deletes it

Whoever clicks Save last, wins. But both edits get comitted to the history, so you can rummage through and dig stuff out if you need to.

@pip I realise I got the instructions slightly wrong. I’ve moved you to the main list. Are you confirmed available?

@Dermot Yes totally confirmed free, thanks.

@matt apologies, I missed you from the list somehow.

No worries. I only signalled my interest via a like.

Just a little bump.

Four people not responded, and one place available for certain

I see @RichM has a rcoss by his name. Does that mean I can take his place?

You’ll get his place!

Woohoo!

@Marco_Pagliari @unknowndomain @alex @ben I need to know if you want places on this. I’ll clear your names from the list if you don’t confirm by midnight tonight.
