Film screenings at the Makerspace?

Well courtesy dictates…

Other ideas:

Just had a good chat with David Korda, who is a film biz person…

Some ideas that came up:

Bridge over the River Kwai.

Features making, railways and blowing things up. Plus it’s a bloody good ‘movie’.

Rembrandt (made by David’s uncle), I now have a copy to watch. Classic from 1936

There are quite a few films about painters and musicians…

The idea of getting Aardman animation interested. A stop motion/claymation workshop is potentially family friendly. Worth an email.

The Man in the White Suit came up again!

Just to make things even more complicated - have you considered a Scfi/horror (given were in an arch and could do an evening session ?)

“Hardware” is a classic B movie from the 90’s, my mate Andy Stone played robot and I helped (in a very minor way) on the sfx /remote control. Andy would be happy to come and talk in exchange for a beer or two…

There’s also ‘Colin’ the zombie movie made in Tooting for £50 budget (so the press release says…)

Holy crap!

I haven’t been on discourse in ages and missed loads. So we need to submit a proposal to the organisers tomorrow!

There’s loads of good suggestions but a decision must be made! Maybe some of the things are something that we can do on our own at another time, like secret life of machines and recreating them or some related activity.

Dermot and I met yesterday and decided that it would be great to do a workshop and film.
It’s a great way to get people down and have a go at making.

Here are my thoughts based on what’s been suggested:

sewing workshop + film: The Man in the White Suit
woodworking session + film: vintage woodworking short love it lol plus something else - (A Simple Curve?)Not sure here for film
animation workshop + film: World of Tomorrow
electronics workshop + film: Make documentary

I don’t know where you could put the bridge blowing up workshop & film though, or do Sundays too (if that works with Make the Space)?! Or drop the sewing workshop?
I also like the idea of someone local with a screening plus Q+A but not sure if there’s time to organise that.

Total aside, I love Richard Ayoade!

I would assume that for a film screening, we will have rows of seating in the clean workshop in front of a screen. If it is filled to capacity, I am not sure that a workshop is going to work very well, as workshops generally require that participants each have work space at a desk or similar. You could seat people around the main table, but I think that has a maximum capacity of about ten or so. So would we be turning all but the first ten people away? I would suggest keeping it simple with just a film screening. It could be a sort of open evening-type event before or after the screening where members can talk to visitors about the space to raise our profile.

Workshop and film evening could work well next year when we have a bit more space.

We need to attract people in with the qualityp of the films, then?

So…audience bring their own chairs. It’s a convention of these screenings.

So phase 1 would need to be clear if big tables by time of screening.

This year we will likely have the advantage that the wet/messy room will have a good amount of space. It’s likely to be much more crowded in a year’s time.

However it’s up to us how ambitious we want to be.

If we’re keen to do something madly out of our league like building a bridge and blowing it up, then we’re in as good a position to do it this year as any other.

If members want to take on a challenge than I’ll support that. If there’s no appetite, then we scale it back.

BTW it who had experience with animation? And how hard would it be to set up an animation workshop?

depends on what you mean by animation, there are alot stages in “ANIMATION” which include the stage where u animate (keyframe) but also include modelling, rigging, lighting, shading and on and on.
what kind of maker related animating do u envisage?

I imagined something as simple as a webcam over table, and stop frame animation using cut out coloured paper. Or hand drawn on a whiteboard?

All depends on what’s realistic to achieve, and that ‘all ages’ might get some sense of achievement out of.

What do you think?

well, when i’ve done it in the past with small seven year olds i just used flip books i had made on the corner of post it notes and then gave them blank post it notes to do that themselves
simple and something they can take home,
not sure what adults would go in for?

Lego animation?

I’d say an animation workshop is a great and doable idea. We can decide what it involves later. Paper, Lego Maya…

What we have to decide tonight is what film/shorts and when.

Seems like a workshop needs a Saturday or Sunday?

The films need to be ‘suitable for all the family’

I guess ‘not Toy Story’ would be my input.

I’m around to help every weekend in May except the one from Friday 20th.

The following weekend is a bank holiday.

Suggestions?

What about the Dam Busters?

I would totally come to the sewing workshop + film combination. I want to see that film and learn how to use the sewing machines. And have some spare cushion fillings I’d be happy to donate to a workshop.

A workshop wouldn’t have to be anything complicated - it could even just be a demo / display of all our sewing gear and a bit of time to play with it before or after the film? Same for the other combinations? I think people would come.

Iv liked Jackie’s Devil wears Prada and make your own clothes workshop combo.

We’re out of time when the sun rises tomorrow

@members who’s able to offer their skills/time to this great opportunity?

Conor, are you willing to share 0.001% of your expertise? Which I imagine still adds up to a meaningful amount…

Too late for more ideas* but if any of the ones in the last few posts grab anyone, now is the time to speak!

*EDIT: unless you’ve come up with a great suggestion, with a date, a workshop and have the time/availability to support it.

OK, so at the risk of making a snap decision, I’ll offer to find a copy of the Make documentary, and show it on the 8th of May (Sunday), as I think that the festival has screenings on the 7th and 9th. Does anyone have the time/skills during that day to run a workshop? If not, i might have to learn how to do something first, or it’ll turn into a film workshop.

Who should I email at the festival to confirm the details?

I’m happy to help support. But not sure what practical I could use.

Just a random thought: ex mechina. I know Murray Shanahan rather well (his book ‘embodiment and the inner life’ was one of the basis of this film, and he was scientific adviser for it) he might be interested in coming to chat. I could ask?

Nice one Rory.

With dates, check that you’re not making the same error as I did: on the festival homepage it had a list of last year’s films!

The Events team will handle emailing the Festival.
