Film screenings at the Makerspace?

@members how about this: we can host events as part of the Herne Hill Free Film Festival during May this year.

The scope for us in this is very wide: we get to propose what film/films we’d like, they provide the screen, projector and publicity, the audience bring their own chairs.

My understanding is that we can propose any movie(s), but that ‘rare’ ones tend to be more costly.

This could be a lot of fun and a chance for us to engage with a wider local audience.

We could choose a theme: Making? Films featuring railway arches? Films made by members?

Members could get together and make films specifically for this. Perhaps along the lines of ‘site specific’ theatre?

But hold on…!

First things first:

Do we want to do this?

Shall we become the South London MovieSpace for a few nights?

And who’s interested in pitching in?

I’m keen on the @events side.

Who is paying for the films?

The Festival funds the films. That’s my understanding: we just provide the venue.

They say they have the relevant insurance and licences. We double check all this if we go for it.

We should use 1/3 of the space as a gallery to showcases members work . If we are going to let people just use the space the members should have the chance to sell them shit .

Like it!

We should also be selling the Makerspace

I’d be happy to pitch in. I might know a few things about cinema tech…

Cryptic!

But good.

Hey, I mentioned that I have a 5 speaker surround sound system with subwoofer and integrated dvd player that I never use and happy to donate to the space. Also works with other external inputs (no HDMI). It’s old but sounds great.

I like it! Would be happy to help out

Yes, I remember. And it’s a nice offer.

The Festival will provide the necessary gear, which includes a better projector than ours, however don’t know what the sound system will be like.

The other question is whether we can justify the the space for a sound system and how much is it likely to be used?

Ditto, sounds like a fantastic opportunity to tick a lot of boxes re community outreach / showcasing + selling things.

Looking at the current roster of films its a real mix of old black and white films, short films, hollywood, and independent cinema. Basically anything goes, so we should be fine with what ever we suggest. My feeling is to go with a series of shorter films, with opportunities for showcasing / socialising in between films?

They have a 48hr film making competition, could be fun:

Ah ok, will hold onto it for a while anyway.

Let’s see what the consensus is.

At the moment anything brought to the space is in danger of being chocked to death with dust…

(Just came out of doing tech work for film post production & deliverables.)

Good idea. I know of a few short blacksmithing films that could be part of a collection of short making films.

Or Hackers?

If you need some speakers and an amp for sound I have some kicking around.

Equipment is not an issue - everything will be provided by the festival. The olny question is : do we want to host screensigs? and if so, what films?

Update: they’re able to provide all the equipment and AV operationb expertise… However if we are able to provide any of the above it helps with their costs and logistics.

What’s the dates for this please?

Festival runs whole of May, so up to us to choose date or dates
