Film screenings at the Makerspace?

When we did this in the old space with them they organised everything, but there are loads of good Maker films.

This sounds like it could be a lot of fun and a great way to show off the space / members’ work - I’m in!

No idea what films would be a good fit for us and would appeal to enough people though! Something about robots? Or that chess computer from the 70s?

So, doing a bit of research, should people be into documentaries:

Apparently there’s a few film festivals around, should people be looking for inspiration.

Singapore design festival: http://www.designfilmfestival.com/2014/index.php

San Diego Design Film Festival http://www.sddesignff.com/

Architecture and Design Film Festival http://adfilmfest.com/

Apparently Make made a documentary via kickstarter. http://makerthemovie.com/

I haven’t seen it, but apparently Capture the Flag is a good makers film. Would bring the kids in too.

Back to the Future? Any James Bond?

Sorry if that brought the tone down a bit…

Bttf is a bit makery  a trilogy over three nights?

Sounds like a great idea & would be happy to help out. I have a couple of friends who work in documentary filmmaking, so I’ll see if they have any relevant projects/suggestions.

Hi Patsy,

That would be great.

I’ll contact a few people too.

Let’s see if a theme emerges over the next week or so.

If not then maybe a group of interested parties should meet up and knock a proposal together.

Giving this a bump, as the organisers have been chasing me

The consensus seems in favour of doing something…

Let’s try to define it a bit more:

I’d suggest Tuesday and Friday nights as the ones that don’t have any particular designation.

Canopy are open on Fridays

So, we could have a film/films every Friday night in May?

A theme seems a good idea.

Should it be makers/making? Interpreted as broadly as we like?

Yes.

We also have to decide between Hollywood blockbusters or ‘worthy’ documentaries.

Or maybe we don’t?

I think that we should only show films from a genre that has been central to the development of technology

Only Star Trek movies then?

Or, A Hollywood film, prefixed by some kind of discussion or a short film talking about its influence on technology?

Would require more research and work tho. We might have access to people with the right kind of feelers though?

Pretty good rating…looks interesting

It’s great - has a real maker/hacker spirit to it.

I actually have stashed away in my shed a lens that is suitable for projecting a camera obscura image. If we blacked out the front windows, we could project the beautiful estate scenery onto the screen before showing the film.

Anything like this we can do that adds value is great. Projecting onto the ceiling has been mentioned too…however the idea of the audience lying on their backs watching a movie got short schrift from @JackieO

I really like "The Man in the White Suit"
