I think ceramics is ok?
Also if you are using hand tools for instance in the woodshop or metalshop alone you should be able to have your dog. It is unfair to say blanket no arch 2.

That did occur to me - as long as we’re happy with access via the spaces we’re concerned about (and if ceramics are happy with dogs in their admittedly small area).
This looks good to me.
The only comment I have is that it is almost impossible to ensure that any dog is flea, tick and parasite free.
The best an owner can do is to regularly treat the dog for flea, ticks and worms.
[Edit]
I’m also not sure what “well groomed” means, or it’s purpose.
I suspect it’s means that dogs shouldn’t shed too much hair, or perhaps be too smelly.
It might be worth adding that if a heavily shedding dog is in the space, that any dog hair should be vacuumed when they leave.
My dog happens to be inherently scruffy. She also has a digestive disorder and she often smells of the medicine that she needs to keep her alive, so she can be a bit stinky…
Yea Im not sure I took it from my office policy… I think it is just trying to avoid being all muddy, unkempt etc. just shedding unless it is crazy is probably no big deal…
And same, just try not to give us all fleas!
Dog owners tend to believe their dog is well behaved even when it isn’t. Dogs jumping up on someone gets met with ‘don’t mind him, he’s like that’ etc,
A dog not on a lead in Arch 2 seems a serious risk to me. I certainly don’t want the possibility of a dog jumping up on me while at the metal lathe or table saw, or chop saw, band saw, grinder etc, Allowing dogs to be off leads in Arch 2 seems a very bad idea to me, Better not to have dogs even on a lead unless a fully trained assistive dog. It presents a clear foreseeable risk, and if there was any personal injury caused by a dog, there would almost certainly be liability for that.
A space with industrial equipment like table saws and lathes which can cause serious injury is different from an office space. We shouldn’t rely on a dog policy from a very different context.
I think the longer version of the Draft policy covers your concerns - specially the ‘Safety Around Tools’ section.
If you think something is missing/needs further clarification - feel free to suggest amendments so we can get a policy together that works for us all.
Can I suggest that the rule that dogs must be on a short lead at all times in the Makerspace and that the lead must be secured to a human or an immovable object would solve a lot of this?
I think that is unfair to dog owners… but maybe some more of then can chime in…
To be honest, that’s not really any different from most pubs and cafes.
As a dog owner I don’t think it’s unreasonable.
Dear all, We do have two new members with dogs the first being a 16 year old jack russell which is very friendly and likes to say hi to everyone and a young boxer that has been on a lead (yes he whimpers a bit but thats not a bad thing ) both owners are supper nice and very understanding . Keep well . Brian D=
Hi all,
Just bumping this up - if any dog owners want to chime in… - this post has the latest draft:
Thanks!
Andy
NADO - But I don’t think this policy is clear enough that Dogs shouldn’t be allowed in the wood or metal workshops - it feels like it’s written in a round about way under Safety Around Tools, but theres no version of a dog staying in Arch 2 (other than Ceramics) which is safe for humans or dogs.
EDIT: Clarify I didn’t mean to include Ceramics.
I disagree, depends on what you members are doing in those areas, and Ceramics…
This depends on what any member wants to be doing not on the dog owner. If someone walks in with a heavy object is is not reasonable to expect them to check for a dog before walking in.
It’s not reasonable to expect users to check for a dog before turning on the table saw
Yes, I meant what is happening in the area…
I don’t have a dog, so don’t really care, just trying to be fair to dog owners, but if they don’t care about being on leads and not using arch 2, then that’s fine too.
IMO dogs are fine in ceramics but not elsewhere in arch 2.
ceramics is through metal. This sounds like either they are allowed in meatal or not
Edited to clarify my intention, I don’t see an issue with a dog walking through on a leash to ceramics.
Seconded, with my tech hat on I am not happy with dogs in the woodshop as a safety issue (bar service dogs naturally). Every respect to well behaved dogs and their owners but the potential for serious incidents is just too high.
To clarify my position here a little I think the ‘tech hat’ people should have ultimate say anywhere in the makerspace. If woodtechs say dogs ok to walk through on a lead or just allowed I think that is up to them.
If 3d printing decide they want to change something to mean dogs are not welcome they should be in charge of that not they cannot do something because they are in arch 1 because dogs are a concideration.
