Hi all,
Does anyone know the policy for working during an open evening. I was hoping to come and use the planer/thicknesser this evening. Is this ok?
Hi all,

i’ve been in the space working through previous open evenings - it’s no issue, though be prepared to show visitors how cool and exciting your project is
There’s no particular policy about that as far as I’m aware. The planar thicknesser is an incredibly loud machine if not the loudest so that should be taken into consideration. Just let the host(s) know if you can so they can warn the group of people being shown around ahead of time. If you’re feeling particularly courteous, maybe stopping the machine for the tours would be great. Tours in the woodshop don’t take very long and that is what most people are interested to join for so it would be advantageous to be able to show them around. Other non-deafening machines are fine though. There will be a couple of groups most likely going around and you’ll see them in the metal area first to give you some notice.
You’re a paying member, use your space.
It’s helpful to hosts if you let them know when you plan on doing something loud or higher risk, so they can plan their tours accordingly, whether by using PPE or keeping a safe distance. I’ve never heard or read a rule saying we have to stop our projects so non-members can have a close look. Being respectful to all and welcoming to visitors is part of what I think makes our community exceptional, and it makes me very proud to be a member.
Totally agree with @ed_o: If I’m taking a tour, I explain near the beginning that the real joy of being part of the space — even more than the vast racks of tools I’m about to show you — is meeting the other members and asking ‘what are you working on?’. And I spend the tour demonstrating that joy, so I’d very much hope that someone’s going to be in each of the places working on something.
