Wooden Milking Stool

Hey all,

I’ve finished my first project at our space and thought I’d pop some photos on here!

It’s a three-legged milking stool made using beech branches from Epping forest for the legs and spacers, an offcut of an old theatre bench left by Joe (if I remember correctly), wedges made from sapele offcuts, red twine accent, and brass rod to fill holes that were already in the underside of the seat. I finished the stool with a few coats of Danish oil, and sealed the twine with melamine lacquer.

Points learned:
• Level the drill press bed, and use clamps - especially when using a forstner bit
• Mortice and tenon joints need to be cut accurately
• Don’t use an angle grinder to wear down metal when it has been epoxied into wood, it WILL set on fire
• When using a spoke-shave, go with the grain. It may not be the direction you think but the ease of the cut gives it away
• An orbital sander won’t dish a stool any time soon

It’s the one joint that turned out well, hence it’s the only one I’ll show people
