I am currently looking at getting a fan wired up for a laminar flow hood I’m building, and I’m rather out of my depth on the electronics! I was thinking of popping down to an electronics night but thought it may be better to get some insight on necessary components/etc before hand. Any guidance would be immensely appreciated.
Ideally the fan will be mains powered, potentially with speed adjustment wired in. Initially this seemed fairly simple, connecting up a mains plug with the controller in series, but after picking up the fan, I’m not so sure!
There’s a 3 out (mains wiring) and a 4 out. Diagram seems to suggest that the 4 out is for an interface.
I’m not fussed about utilising an interface (other than controlling the speed), but I assume it wouldn’t be correct to just leave the crimped wires in situ…! Any advice on how to go about wiring up to mains, with a variable speed controller would be amazing.
I’m definitely not an expert on this type of controller but from a quick read through, the fan needs both power and a controller to tell it how fast to spin.
You can either buy a controller, or make one.
On a quick read through, the controller needs to output 10V as a PWM (pulse width modulation) signal.
I have 12V PWM modules which will probably work at 10V, but will need a 10V power supply.
Very happy to try and help you with this.
I may not make it electronics night this week, I have to go to Somerset and not sure what time I’ll be back.
Thank you so much for responding! And no worries about posting twice, I realised the time I posted was when everyone was probably out enjoy the sun haha.
Just to clarify, I should pick up a 10K potentiometer alongside a 10V power supply?
No worries about making it this Thursday as I need to order these things anyway
Okay, awesome! I’m a little ropey at circuit diagrams, but the 3 out will still just be wired up to a mains socket then the potentiometer to the 4 out?
Thanks so much for the help - I’ll go and do some circuit diagram learning!
Just wanted to say thank you again for this! The colours you put matched the wires and made it easier for @Jem when he helped me. We got the fan working wooo!
