Which textiles tools require induction?

First of all, the textiles area is looking great! :thread: Thanks @textilestechs

I couldn’t answer some textiles-related questions from new members regarding @welcome, and I suspect others may have the same uncertainties.

Could you clarify the current induction requirements?

  • Do all machines in the textiles area require an induction (including the heat press, tufting gun)?
  • How many different inductions are there at the moment ( Knitting machines, domestic sewing machine and embroidery machines are the waiting lists I could find)?
  • Is there a general sewing machine induction that covers all sewing machines or are these separate inductions:
    • the semi-industrial Bernina
    • the industrial Wimsew
    • the old Singer machine
    • non-industrial machines?
  • Can members use hand tools (fabric cutting tools, leather tools, etc.) or use the area without an induction?

I want to make sure I am giving new members correct information and setting expectations clearly.

Thanks in advance! :slightly_smiling_face:

(edit: clarify waiting list I just found)

Hi Karen,

Bice to hear from you!

I am a bit overwhelmed with the refurbishment of the textile room and the inductions as I also have two jobs.

I do as many inductions as I can on the domestic machine as it is a requirement to know how to sew before using the embroidery machine. Lia helps with the Embroidery machine induction have not created a list. Lia helps with the inductions as much as she can as I have no clue how to use the embroidery machine (I hand embroider need induction myself) .

We are in the process of recruiting more inductors, as some have shown interest.

I could do with some help as I am a bit overwhelmed.

Thank you.

I am happy to help with inductions and other things you need help with!

Is there any written record of who has been inducted on what so far? We will need that list if we want to add any form of tool control to the machines (cf the other thread about storage lockers).

Even regardless of tool control this is a good thing to have if there’s ever a dispute about whether someone is inducted.

Other areas have induction groups even for items that need inductions but aren’t behind tool control (eg. the wood shop’s router, domino, tracksaw).

@Kyle this would need more Discourse and Wordpress groups and (some day) sync between the two.
