What is off limits in the workshop?

I’m waiting to do a workshop induction but I just want to know if you deem every tool in the workshop to be off limits until this point?
I can understand the need for the induction on the more dangerous and delicate tools, but does it include things like hand-sanders etc?

Cheers :slight_smile:

@woodtechs should be able to clarify this.

…and @welcome should be pointing at whatever doc we have to answer it. (this is a good + obvious question!)

Depending on the amount of experience you have.

Come in and talk to me or mark

The principle at its simplest is that inductions are needed when you – and other members – are at risk from the tool (wood work tools with spinning blades, for example), or the equipment is at risk from members (laser cutter is a good example).

Induction is compulsory for woodwork tools where our Risk Assessment says that an induction is needed to reduce the risk of using the tool to an acceptable level.

Orbital sander is not a tool that would normally be considered a significant enough risk to need an induction.

In the woodshop the small powertools are marked on their shelves to indicate whether they need an induction, but I don’t think we have a list anywhere: that might be very useful. Apart from, I think, the cross-cut saw, all the big tools are under key control – which will soon convert to keyfob control and be operable by people inducted on them.

We haven’t yet started inductions on the table saw, planer-thicknesser and bandsaw as far as I’m aware.

P.S. we’re always on the lookout for members with extensive workshop experience to contribute to the induction process.

@joeatkin2
Ill come in sometime soon, i have a small project that i want to get squared off anyway. how often are you around the space?

@Dermot
Ill need to have a look over the tools to see whats what. Basically I need to cut some aluminium sheet and smooth off the edges with a file before hammering some rivets into it. I was thinking the hand cutter could be useful for this and potentially the sander as it will need to align with wood.
I studied product design at university so i’m well versed on workshop safety and tooling, maybe not as experienced as you would like me to be to carry out inductions just yet though.

The metal stuff is with @frasco but it’s not going to be ready for a bit.

It’s a long chain, but waiting for roof support.

This is good info and (even if self-apparent once you’re in the space) should be part of the @welcome message.
