What have you built?

Hi there, I’m Max and I’m new here.
Seeing the diversity of profiles and interest, I wanted to ask the members : what have you built at the Maker Space that you’re most proud of?

(No bad answers, it’s time to brag

Hi Max, welcome . I made an audio interface / network router! (the UI is just a mockup though still WIP)

That’s a cute device (and UI)! Excuse my noobness but is it about broadcasting audio over network? Did you 3D print the case?

Yes that’s right, it sends audio over the network but it also has a few interesting and unusual features e.g. GPS time sync. I designed the case in Onshape. Here it is being 3D printed:

That’s cool
The GPS thing is intriguing, but it makes sense.
If I see you working on it at the space, I might you for a demo

I’ve been meaning to post this up for ages. It’s exactly what it looks like: an illuminated sign made out of steel - mostly 1mm sheet but I bent the T out of rebar, which was deeply satisfying and actually the quickest part of the build.

This was for a micro festival - essentially a rave - I did over the summer. We were doing more art this year so I made a sign for the art space. It says “ART”. Subtlety is overrated.

This is it as I finished it on the floor of metalworking

And in a beautiful example of serendipity, when I actually put it up on site I happened to put it up next to a bin with a ‘landfill’ sign on it, suggesting that the gap between art and landfill is very small

The result is great! And extra coloured light is always welcome at a rave
What machine did you use for cutting? I’m not super familiar with the difference between the laser cutting machines. Also, how did you do the effect on the metal?

Thanks man!

Yeah if anything it ended up more subtle than I intended with the light. I didn’t have a lot of time so they’re off the shelf self-adhesive RGB strips and a narrower light strip

It’s not laser cut - we don’t have anything in the space that can handle metal so it’s all cut by hand. I used the new bandsaw we have in metal -thanks to @stefanoromano and @VintageSteel for getting it up and running while I was working on this. I used a grinder for parts as well. It’s all 1mm so it’s quite easy to cut and it’s relatively scrappy so it’s not too critical.

Some shocking welding on it but I didn’t have a lot of time in the end and the welder wasn’t playing ball!
