Welding project

Tags: #<Tag:0x00007fa498152b80>

Really keen to make my own bike racks, -

My rough and unresearched plan is -

  • buy some tubular stock
  • experiment with cold bending, hot bending
  • experiment with welding
  • attempt to fabricate a rack like the above
  • find a way to paint? Is this a spray booth job? Assuming you need more than just a spray can…

Not sure if anyone wants to join in or has any pointers?

I don’t have any took inductions in the metal shop but I am also interested in making racks / basket mounts and maybe some hand beaten mini mudguards (Clandestine Cycles has made a few which look great).

No welding / metal skills to offer but keen to see the project. I have a front rack with a fence and I’m super glad to have the fence, makes it a lot easier to just chuck something on

does the space have a pipe bender? @metaltechs

Mainly going off this as reference video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIrDJ4mTd_U

No, we don’t. SMEE may have one.
What material we’re talking about and what pipe/wall thickness? Video is about stainless, but even there you may just bend it with your hands or use some hardwood/ply circle as a template. Also a reminder we cannot weld aluminium atm.

Good plan.
Get the right tubing. They seem to use 0.8mm thin walled 25CrMo4.
You’ll also need to learn about tube mitering (frame builder terminology) or tube notching (general metalwork term).

Can we weld 25CrMo4 at the space?

Also any recommendations to practice or learn about tube mitering or tube notching?

Definitely weldable. There’s a technique to do it with a MIG if a TIG isn’t available. The issue is with procuring this material in UK!

Bicycle tube mitering concepts can be picked up watching YouTube vids.

Does this look correct?

From Allygne.de: …0.8mm thin walled high strength 25CrMo4…

Looks about right, but fundamentally your decision.

should it be ambitious to weld with this thickness? also custom filler rods?

whats a filler rod? I did okay welding old bike gears, they were incredibly thin, just took a lot of experimentation
