We had to throw out the water cartridges

Hello!

The cartridge in the kitchen water filter should be replaced quite often as it gets heavy use. Unfortunately the cartridges under the sink had torn bags and bite marks (mice?).

I will bring a cartridge from home for now. Would we be able to purchase more cartridges, and keep them in a sealed box?

Mia

Why do we need these anyway, doesn’t seem very sustainable, especially given that tap water is so clean in the UK.

I think it’s more about the removing impurities from the water to reduce the buildups and wear on small appliances like kettles. I have one at home and I drink water from the tap but use the filtered water for the coffee machines and kettle and it makes a visible difference.

Whether increasing an applicance’s lifespan offsets the cost and environmental impact of consuming water filters I do not know though…

I think these refillable ones are a bit more sustainable but a bit fiddlier to change:

Good point if you have a direct supply from a water company. But we don’t . We have piggy backed over the years from the supply that runs across the top of the arches. And more recently from one of the shops in front of us (speak to @joeatkin2 to confirm )

We do not have a meter nor do I think we have ever had a bill but check with the @directors

It’s a misnomer - they are usually a mix of ion exchanger (removing limescale) with activated carbon (removing chlorine), acting as a taste improvement rather than being a proper filter.

I’m pretty sure I remember us having a Thames Water bill back in the day, and that there were 2 pipes coming into the space, the one over the top, and another we capped unused from the ground.

If we’re really not paying Thames Water I’d be extremely concerned about them eventually working that out and calculating 8+ years of back bills.

Sort of why I’m asking, if people want tasty water thats fine, but why are we using member funds for this, and what is it costing, Britta filters are expensive and they don’t last very long before they’re supposed to be swapped, so if we’re using it properly it’s likely just pouring money away.

New filter. Tasty water (for now)!
