Hello. I am a trustee of the Carnegie Library Hub which is a non-profit community hub that has just been offered a lease by Lambeth to prove it’s credentials and strategy. We are in need of quite a large stud based walk in storage unit in one of the large rooms to house all the tables and chairs we use so that they can be wheeled out of sight etc. It will eventually be clad in nice material too. Are there any budding carpenters out there that would be interest in such a project on preferably a voluntary basis? All materials would be paid for. The Carnegie Library is a wonderful grade II listed building in HH ward and so would suit someone who wants to give back to the community in a practical way. Anyone interested to talk, let me know! Tom
Hi Tom.
We love the library and use it very often. Very happy to pitch in with a few hours.
Thanks for your interest! I’m meeting someone from the makerspace who was also interested in thinking about the design and build. How could I get in touch with you if they need some help for example with the doors or something like that?
Hello all. This project is shaping up nicely. We’re going to build a free standing storage box which is 1.4d x 4.8w x 3.3h (it’s big, but it’s a big room too) with an upper balcony for storage and event lighting. Double doors on the front for all the trolleys to go in. A project manager has kindly stepped forward from makerspace @Riggerz who will be managing the project (Thanks Darren!). We’re planning on buying materials next week and hopefully perhaps starting the following Monday 3rd Feb. 2nd phase design to come, but this is what it’s looking like below. Any people willing to help week of 3rd give us a shout. The Carnegie is a beautiful building! Whilst it may sound like just storage it’s actually a massive deal for us as it will make the room look so much better and also very multi-functional.
Thanks, Tom
Hello Ms,
Yesterday our carpenters from makers space started working on our monolithic trolley storage solution at the Carnegie Library Hub (our community hub)
Thank you @Riggerz and @jdminiatures for taking on the project. A few more materials for me to buy today.
I’ll try and do some further updates by end of week.
The community and hub partners who put on events will certainly be grateful.
Tom
Hello Makerspace,
We’ve done the lift today and the work from @Riggerz and @jdminiatures has been amazing. Also @JanT came at lunchtime out of his working day to help do the lift. So thank you all round.
Next step is to deck the 1st floor and then the access hatch. And then the plan is to skin the outside with sound absorbing material.
We are designing Totems for the hallways for our wayfinding maps and posters. If there are any keen public space designers let me know. There is a lot to do at the hub! Thanks. Tom
Its been an amazing week, Tom. Thank you for the opportunities, fruit and coffees!
A big thank you to @jdminiatures , John, who has been a real gem of a foreman. Thanks John.
Thanks also to @JanT who came by with an experienced eye to oversee the safety and quality of work. Thanks for the steel toecap boots help today!
Wow! Good job everyone!!
Hello, I am struggling to find a way to arrange to meet a few people at your space next week maybe on Monday ?
I run a maker space at the University of Exeter and I’m doing a keynote talk in June so I am keen to expand my network and connect with other maker spaces on the UK.
I love how this space is run by volunteers and I’d like to come and find out more.
Thanks
Corrina Cory
Hello MSpace,
We’ve finished (phase I of!) the storage project at the Carnegie Library Hub. Thank you @JanT for your support and guidance. Thank you @jdminiatures for your fun and maturity on the project and being so handy. And of course thank you @Riggerz who gave the community 10 days of excellent carpentry and willing to go with this bonkers scheme of a 1 storey storage container! And great carpentry skills. And great tenacity from all. Good brief to go with. And who knows what will be recognised by the community but it allows our limited budget to go so much further. Xxx Thank you Darren and team. Xxx
