Vacancies:- woodtechs and more required

We require a number of @woodtechs to join the current team, or we need members to take some of the strain from the current woodtechs.
@mbg has done a brilliant job but basically been running the place on his own.

Unfortunately I have not had the time to commit enough to this important space. Work commitments and France means that I am now booked up full time till March next year. And there is a fair chance I will be leaving the space for good next summer.

So I think it would be good if we had the following

Woodtech x3

Between them and with @mbg and myself they will have the responsibility for the smooth running of the woodshop, Ideally be competent in the use of all of the machinery, and be prepared to learn how to maintain and repair all of them.
Also keep control of the wood storage, keep the air scrubbers and extract working. And we need some fresh ideas on how the woodshop runs,
You must be a competent woodworker with experience in both hand and power tools and be able to pass your knowledge and experience on to the rest of the membership.

And you will need to commit to coming to the space regularly. And to take part in woodtechs meeting to make decisions.

Inductors x4

We need a number of inductors to help reduce the current waiting lists for the basic induction, and the advanced inductions for the other machinery.
With the aim to move after a time to become a woodtech.

You will have woodwork experience and be confident with all the tools contained within the basic induction, and are prepared to spend 3-4 hours in the space for each time the basic induction is held.

If you have confidence and experience with one particular tool (ie, bandsaw or table saw could you give some time to sign off members that have taken the online assessments?

Woodwork liason/treasurer/buyer

Woodwork experience not required.
Your role would be to check consumable levels (glues, tapes, drill bits spare sandpaper belts etc and to order to ensure there is a constant supply.

Also to be a central point for woodtechs to order items through. Ideally being prepared to spend some time researching products to get the best prices, chase deliveries and make sure the woodshop is up to date when items are arriving.

I will be at the space on Monday 11/11/24 19:00 to 21:00 for the woodwork night if you want to grab me to discuss any of these positions,
Or alternatively private message @woodtechs

Hey I’m keen to give back more but I’m not a regular at the space, I’m happy to take an inductor role if that’s seen as a lower commitment role!

After speaking with Mark i’m happy to fill the ‘advanced’ tools induction role, Tracksaw, Router (although not Router table, yet), Bandsaw (Although I need to be shown how to tighten), Tablesaw and Planer Thicknesser could all work for me.

Having talked to Mark last night, I’d be willing to step up as a woodtech again and commit to being down one day most weekends (potentially using first thing on a Saturday to run inductions or something), and the odd weekday evening.

How many hours a week would the treasurer/buyer require in your opinion Mark?

Once a week to have a walk through the woodshop and check our supplies and see if anything has been requested on the blackboard on the left door to the arch.
And then receiving requests from @woodtechs as and when by text, call, WhatsApp or in person collating the orders and ordering them.

The @woodtechs can make a list of everything consumable we should have available in the woodshop.

Think of a typical week as something like-
Stocks are checked and you notice we are short of masking tape, mitre bond, 60grit sandpaper disks and 120grit sandpaper sheets.
The blackboard says we are out of PZ2 driver bits and the pad on the orbital sander is worn down.

@mbg requests the planer blades need sharpening and I ask for you to get some paste wax and some splinter guard for the festool tracks.

You control the ordering.
We can help you with any terminology you are not sure of and a list of suppliers we currently use.
I don’t see it taking a lot of time.

Sorry I’ve just seen the message so couldn’t make it for Monday but I would be happy to go back on running inductions

Hi Mark,

Just seeing this. I’m happy to commit helping in the space. Think in capacity of inductor would be best for my level of experience. Happy to discuss in more detail.

For clarity, Mark is not taking any personal grievances against France out on SLMS, nor is the French Government interfering with anyone’s ability to perform as a woodtech. Please contact the directors if the latter happens to you.

If needed I could help with doing assessments for the bandsaw and planer/thicknesser if a wood tech can brief me on things to look out for. I’m not of much use with the rest of the tools unfortunately.
