Using the metal in the metal workshop

There’s a really well organised library of scrap/ offcut metals in the workshop. Just wanted to check - are those pieces for use by any members? Do we pay to use them? And if I’ve got anything to donate shall I put it straight in there?

Same question to the box of long metal pieces on the other side of the workshop. Of course not pieces that have a project tag on them. Cheers!

Hi Bertie,
Thanks for checking with us about this.

As a general rule, anything in the stock cabinet is up for grabs, and the same goes for the fabrication material in the corner on the left of the lathe.

As you correctly pointed out, please make sure you don’t take anything with a tag on.

Here are a couple of pointers.

  1. The “library” of stock offcutts, is only partially organised; we don’t know what kind of steel or what alloy of aluminium we have, so do your own test.
  2. Please be mindful of wastage. If you need a small washer, don’t use our bigger and longer bar of stock we have! Metal is expensive, so please minimise waste whenever possible.

That said, at the moment, we are not charging for metal; maybe in the future we will, but for now, it’s free.

Out of curiosity, what project you have in mind?

When do we get a Sumup machine?

We are currently working behind the scenes to work this out mate!

Probably will not be a sum up machine, but the possibility of buying stuff on the makerspace materials shop (like 3d printing filament).
