Up for grabs: large perspex (?) box

Found in snug, possibly scavenged from somewhere. Meterial unknown, therefore uncertain whether suitable for laser cutting (@lasertechs ?) if dismanted. Does anyone have a use for this? Want it? Otherwise it will be discarded at the end of this week.

@joeatkin2 wanted this I believe…

That’s currently got a load of (probably) useless ewaste in it and when it’s done that duty it’s going into the wood shop.

It’s polycarbonate IIRC, so can’t be Lasered

Wombled from cass because we thought it might be laseable. If not, bin!

It looks perspex to me

It almost certainly is Acrylic/PMMA in my opinion, so we just need to fold it down and put the pieces in the laser store.

How do you tell? Is there a test?

Otherwise it would make a great bingo machine; y’know, the ones with ping
pong balls.

It’s clear plastic so it’s either PMMA or PC and it’s intended for use in retail point of sale so it’s likely made to be cheap thus probably PMMA.

Also it has lots of fine scratches in it and PC doesn’t usually scratch as easily like that as PMMA.

There’s a few tests we can do. Acrylic polishes, poly doesn’t, for example

I have read in the past that polycarbonate can be lasered, just not very well.

Heat up a nail and push it into the edge. If it melts, it’s acrylic

I want to try and make better blast gates out of it for the workshop as the ones that we have leak a lot

@Tariq I apologise - apparently someone else (@joeatkin2) had claimed the perspex box for use in the woodshop. Since Makerspace projects presumably take precedence over members’ use, please can you return the box to the Makerspace, even if you have dismantled it already. Sorry for the confusion - my fault.

Oh Oh John ! I have Dismantle and cut it . What now? So sorry.

OK, my fault. Can you return any unused pieces to the Makerspace?

i have a piece . and i will try and find some pieces i have which can be usefull

All is not lost I have found some perpex that could be useful for a guard depending on size
