Tuesday 3rd May - Lost in Space

I’ve just checked the varnish (5:16pm) and it’s still very sticky.
Very very sticky.
I recon it’s gonna be at least another day.
(But that’s an uneducated guess.)

The floor oil and wall oil seem to be in the same state of wetness / stickiness /dryness. So I don’t think it’s because (some of it) is a different product (eg not the floor oil).
There was no overlying or mixing of the products.
We did a panel at a time. And no one panel had two products on it.

Thinking back I’m not sure we may have been aware of exactly how long the 2nd coat took to dry in the messy room as it was done on a Sunday and was maybe undisturbed for a few days.

Any one remember how long the 2nd coat in messy took?

I was worried when I was there earlier that it was all over the walls, why didn’t you guys mask off the area?

I think it was as much on the walls after the first coat as after the 2nd coat.

It wasn’t “all over the walls” as much as “there was some vanish at the very bottom of the walls where the floors meet the walls”. Well it was like that when we left it.

No one had mentioned it as a problem after the first coat and there had been no masking done on the first coat so I didn’t know it was a problem.

Obviously, if we knew that was a problem we wouldn’t have done that.

But sorry if that has caused an issue.

Are the walls not being varnished then?

Can we / should we do something to correct that?

Will it be noticeably behind benches and other equipment?

Has any one checked the first coat of varnish yet?
Is it dry?

Yes it is

Okay.
Should we do a slip test or defiantly just finish off the 2nd coat?

It felt pretty grippy to me, but I didn’t do a thorough test. I would get 2nd/3rd opinions.

Will any one get a chance to do this before Saturday morning? I can do it then

Screw that! I’ll go and do it now!!! Otherwise we lose the whole weekend!!

And he’s only gone an finished it!

Floor ready to go on very soon!

So by 11am Saturday morning (clocking on time) that should be 35 hours drying time.

Floor looking great BTW!

Walls have a bit of oil on therm… They’d look very good oiled, if that’s any consolation

I really don’t think that some little stain of oil on the walls are going to be a problem… or seen at all!

If a bit of stain on the walls is more interesting than the project someone is working on…then maybe it’s time to find a different project?

emotilexic!

I think they should be oiled up in general, lets get a couple cans of the cheaper osmo and finish them up. It’l look nice and we wont have to worry in general.

Yes…however, it’s not that cheap!

But good.

is there a cheaper alternative? over chip-board osmo may be more of a fine finish than is needed, but some kind of oiling would be lovely.

linseed oil?

I have an old baked bean can by my hob that I collect cooking fat in?
