Toilet increasingly smells of rot

I’ve noticed that the washroom has been smelling worse and worse (in an unused state…) and curious if there’s an easy way to check for rot or that the toilet ring is still sealed properly (and any other leak points). It may just be from wear and tear leakage or damp from diligent cleaning, too.

Additionally, the white support/assist bars are quite rusted and we may want to replace them for H&S reasons before someone attempts to use one and it breaks off the wall in their hand.

Happy to help with works of we think there’s something worth doing!

Yes, I’ve noticed that lately, and it’s quite unpleasant.
Could this be because a while back the toiled was negligently flooded, and now the timber is rotting?

There is a endoscope type camera in the Systems box, if someone fancies doing some very careful drilling to have a look under the floor.

If anyone would like to volunteer some time to look at this please let us know. As long as the facilities are not out of use for a prolonged period.

I would propose an initial investigation, plan of action and then we can sign off any costs. If it is deemed that a plumber would be needed we can do that too.

 Could the :rat: have died :face_with_crossed_out_eyes: under the floor :ghost:?

They’re just as likely die on top of the flooring at this point :face_with_medical_mask::biohazard::skull_and_crossbones:

Hi, I think it is linked to the vermin problem as a member has seen it popping out of the hole cut some time ago. Also it seems to be around the sink area ( when the original flood happend last year I suggested that it should be looked at due to it being an ideal place for black mould to thrive ). Keep well . Last week when I signed up I noticed that the toilet, yeah, it smelt real bad, real bad. So I went to the shop and flooded it with air-freshener.

I was wondering if a fan and carbon filter would help to reduce the smell, especially while floorboards are being lifted.

I happen to have a spare carbon filter and fan, which really wouldn’t take long at all to put up, maybe 5 mins or so. The fan can extract through the hole where the current extractor is and I got some tubing as well.

I’m happy to bring the fan and filter to the MakerSpace this morning, like early, cause of the hot weather, but as I don’t have a keyfob, I’ll need to know someone is at the Space first?

Someone needs to actually investigate and see what is causing it, we have a boroscope and there is an access panel by the sink.

So far I haven’t seen anyone volunteer to actually look and see what the issue might be… anyone??

It’s a shitty job (sorry can’t help maself!! but i’ll do it!

OMG, Brian: Hazmat suit? Advice? And the hot weather?!

Mark kindly showed me where the extension was and I have plugged in the carbon filter and fan. It is just on the floor next to the hand dryer between the sink. It seems to be working.

Other’s will put it to ‘The Test!!’

I’ll be back, to terminate the smell of course, this evening at around 6:30 or so.

Stay cool, Keep Cool, and Have Fun

I was really hoping to be able to come back this open evening to meet you’all chat about the toilet. Howard even suggested @toilet-tech  how cool is that!!

But speaking about cool, no I am not, due this extreme heat, I really better not push myself.

Please accept my apologies, I hope the fan and carbon filter is doing its job

The smell has improved a lot. Thanks for installing the filter :slightly_smiling_face:

Very happy to put the filter there and I’m almost over-joyed that it’s working. Howard, I look forward to that beer my friend

But, seriously (yer right) we’ll need to mount the filter. I have a couple of good hooks and cable ties, but feel free to mount the filter on the wall and connect into the electrics.

I am happy to donate the filter to the Space as I believe The Toilet Is Probably the Most Importamt piece of Tech in the SLMS!!

Hey, I think some context got lost here. The toilet (room) flooded (tap left on overnight) a month or 2 ago and nothing beyond mopping it up was done to resolve the issue as far as I’m aware.
