Timber merchants

Where do people get their wood supplies from? I have a few chisels I want to make handles for.

Whitten Timber in Peckham are good, and have an excellent offcuts box.

Thanks Peter

Witton Timber have shrunk by about 80%.
They have had their rent put up and are down sizeing dramatically. You may be disappointed by their stock but actually it’s worth going just to see a bit of history disappearing.

If you want local you could try Acre Lane Timber in Brixton.

Or there’s some other places further a field of the Internet

Thanks for the heads up paul. Acre Lane Timber is probably easier as it’s closer to me.

Oh how sad! Acre lane don’t have much nice stuff. You could try SL hardwoods.

Acre Lane supplies the building trade mostly, so won’t have much in the way of tool handle stock.

Thanks Sarah. It’s a bit of a schlep but needs must.

Cheers Tom. Good to know.

So I went to SL Hardwood in the end. Picked up an off cut of ash, which is more than enough for my needs. Definitely get plenty of chisel handles out of it and maybe even a few other small projects too. Turned my first handle today.

It took a few practice runs to get it right as it’s my first time turning since my induction but chuffed with the results.

I spotted a wood recycling project in factory Lane Croydon if that’s any use to anyone

Those dudes in Fulham Timber Merchants once gave me 30% discount because they liked my project, depending on what your needs are as they focus more on building material… Also a week ago they let me be alone with their free offcut wood at Whittens in Peckham - perfect wood for handles I reckon!

Thought I should get some experience in before the next level induction. Got about 5 more handles to do.
