So on Friday when we were cleaning a couple turned up and had a look around. He was an acoustic engineer and we got to talking about the attempt to sound control in the woodshop.
So basically his advice was to use the wool as we are but then apply something on top to hold it in place and to stop loose fibers that’s 100% air permeable. So you can blow on it and feel it on the other side. The trick was to let the sound waves pass through and break apart in the wool.
So with this ace and very expensive bit of free advice I think I’ll do some googling for such a membrane to hold what we have in place. And job done. Top spec solution.
Ok so the two builders and the engineer agree. Looks like we know what’s up. So can I help Joe and find him the membrane. I’ll do some Google tomorrow.
Ask @joeatkin2 what he has in mind. He may already have a solution.
Possibly 2x1" battens.
The ‘membrane’ is simply to keep the wool in position? In which case there are very low-tech solutions from the world of gardening and chicken-keeping…
Yes and yes I don’t mind as long as its acousticly transparent.
Those gardening and subsidence open clothes were the first thing I was going to check out, chicken wire maybe, I don’t mind as long as everyone is happy with it.
Or just regularly cloth.
Ok we need about 10m of 1 m tall speaker cloth. I’ve found 5m rolls at £23 I’ll get two. End of then it’s done the right way. All agreed? @dermot@joeatkin2@tomnewsom?
