Is there a textile induction? I’ve had a look through previous posts and found the one for a while back saying no, but just wanted to confirm.
I’ve used sowing machines in the past and happy to get myself up to speed with tutorial videos, but equally happy if someone was around and wanted to remind me the basics : ) I plan to make a kite from ripstop nylon so pretty basic to get started with.
@textilestechs can answer for sure, but as far as I know you don’t need an induction. I’ve only seen one of the industrial sewing machines with a link to watch a video about how it works, and a warning that you need to understand its “peculiarities”
That’s correct, you do not need an induction for the textiles area. The sewing machines, overlocker machine, heat press, embroidery machines, etc., all free to use. I would strongly advise to seek advice how to use a particular machine if you are not familiar with them, some are more complicated than others.
@TracyD often holds textile nights and is a good source of knowledge, and @techfolderkites I believe does textile/kite-specific stuff?
Basically it is not ok to tear down a machine and put it back together wrongly just because the needle tension is set wrongly for your project, please pause and ask for help as it can be confusing if something isn’t quite working and feeling like it should just work.
Tension setting and thread type is important to know about and does vary depending on what material you are sewing, however in many circumstances it doesn’t need to be adjusted much, similar in some way to calibration on the laser settings but for average fabric just works, there are other things that affect things such as sewing two different types of fabric, e.g one slippy low weight synthetic and one thick such as leather, may need glueing before stitch but please don’t sew into wet glue, etc etc
Before someone tried to do a D.I.Y teardown and replaced a part upside-down, leading to the idea that we do need an induction and we needed to get an expert in to rebuild the machine
Definitely ask for support if you are struggling to get a quality stitch and if using the machine for the first time.
