Speaker building

Hi everyone,

My name is Nathan and I’m currently finishing the signing up process.

I’d like to learn more about woodworking and electronics, specifically with the intention of building my own speakers and audio instruments.

I’ve been told that there are already some fellow audio / music people within in the space who know how to build speakers so any help would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone knows which machines would be best to get inducted on first or any other pointers, please get in touch!

Thanks & nice to meet you all

Welcome!

I’m sure there are more experienced speakers in builders then me in here but what kind of speakers are you hoping to build?

Hi!

I was going to start off with a small bluetooth speaker just to get my head around the whole process. No crossovers just two small drivers.

similar to this without the concrete:

Perfect  Great starter project. For something like that you have a lot of routes!

Most traditional would just be cutting everything from wood by hand, but you can also use the Mini CNC depending on the size (or eventually the big CNC). You could even use the 3D printers but you would have to design for it and do a little bit of additional work to make the enclosure more suitable. So those inductions would be good to start!

(You could probably use the laser cutter too, depending on the design you want! I’m not sure how thick of ply it can cut but it can probably do the job for an enclosure for two small drivers)

While you’re going through the sign-up process you can start thinking about two questions that kind of go hand-in-hand:

  1. How big/small do you want it?
  2. Which small, full-range drivers do you want to use?

On the page for most drivers, you can see their measured “optimal” internal volume for sealed vs vented designs.

Hi Nathan - welcome to SLMS. I’m very into all of this and happy to chat at some point if it would be helpful.
