South London Grow Space

Not a proposal more a testing the water brain dump…

probably not part of SLMS but very closely tied if theres enough interest

is any one interested in an idea something like:

  • we get some land in london
  • we make a food forest
  • we learn how to make permaculture work in and for the capitol
  • we run experiments in local food production, recylcing, waste recovery
  • we run workshops
  • we share the findings with other similar projects around the world
  • we get involved with projects changing the look and feel of the city and food production and waste disposal loops
  • we get the major interested and get funding

its not in order above.
it would probably have to be more like:

  • write proposal
  • start crowd funding
  • approach major
  • get land
  • start work

but there are similar projects out there getting funding.

and they are offering up to £50K at the moment for these kind of projects, using unused land and running projects to build community and good for environment.

Yeah I started collecting organic seeds, with the idea to start a Seed Bank, where seeds could be planted and exchanged, I would like to explore this idea further, thus may fit with your idea @boldaslove.
Let’s do more research

I’ve seen the orchard it’s look good.

Transition Town Tooting has run a similar project to this for a few years. They are very approachable and would probably be happy to share their experience. I think their land was/is donated by a local owner. Some details of their current program at:

Thanks Martin! I’ll check it out.
Be good to catch up soon too!

Transition Town Tooting is a project I’m very close to!

The community garden land has no long-term agreement though. But it’s free, and the owner has been very supportive.

There’s a similar initiative in Stratford, http://www.abbeygardens.org/ - I’m sure they’d share knowledge and resource to help you get something up and running south of the river…

“ABBEY GARDENS – BAKERS ROW, E15
Abbey Gardens is an open-access harvest garden in the East London borough of Newham where anyone is welcome to participate in the communal growing of flowers, fruit and vegetables. Unlike the traditional allotment system, no one has their own patch and everyone gardens together at regular gardening sessions led by an experienced gardener. The produce is shared among volunteers and is also available to the local community in return for donations from one of the garden’s two Honesty Stalls.”
