What has to happen to get this up and running? How can I help?
Hi Max.
Three issues:
-
It gets dirty with coolant, which isn’t great for the messy room (which doesn’t like anything oliy for the lasers, screen printing and other CnC. So it needs and enclosure or we need to move it to Metal Shop @metaltechs. We’ve been talking about an enclosure, but atm priority is on inductions all over the space as we’re SO behind on CnC, Screen printing, etc waiting lists.
-
We need to extend the counter and form a little L-shape. @silkscreentechs @lasertechs at the moment, conversations are ongoing about landing a layout that works for everyone, so the Sieg drops further down the list of things to do.
So yeah. If we land on a good l;ayout, the messy room (incl the lasers) will need some plywood joinery, which we could bash out in a good weekend. Max, can we get back to you on that for a little weekend work-sesh after we agree a good layout and get things moving?
I’m happy to take on one of these jobs as well ![]()
I think Andys suggestion was good, moving it to the metal workshop. We are completely out of space in the messy room. And any extra room that is made will be taken by screen printing
well… is not like we have an empty football field either… ![]()
Yes but significantly more than the messy room, and surely the mini cnc falls under metalworking anyway
Thanks Sean. If you want to meet next weekend to chat through the eclosure requirements and L-counter extension.
Happy to support on enclosure CAD if it’s any help (am away till Nov 1st though)
Thanks Riyadh - thats great. Sadly, we’re not short on CAD capability. We need someone or a couple of people to take the whole job on and run with from inception to completion!
Please pop by this weekend or another day to be agreed and we can run through everything and maybe set up a working group?
Yeah I’d love to be involved - I can’t do this weekend though as I’m away until Nov 1st. I should be free to meet Nov 1st/2nd and will probably be at the makerspace then anyway.
If a meeting does take place before then - could someone take a couple of notes please? Totally understand you guys want to get this moving asap though, so please ignore all this if those dates are too late!
No probs. We can do a weekend in November. Perhaps I can talk you @riyadh.r and @Sean through this and support you guys to get this installed!
@Kyle and I designed an enclosure, but we weren’t completely convinced of the solution to all the constraints. I think thats why we never pulled the trigger on the £££ of materials. Happy to provide the model if it’s of any help and can be around this weekend. The L shape sounds like a good option.
Can definitely be in this weekend to talk over this, best to start with the new CNC desk first I reckon then move onto the Sieg enclosure as that still needs a few bits before it’s ready to use.
@JanT @Sean I’ll be in today till late, and most of saturday / sunday in case anyone’s around and wants to talk through this
Small update - I’m making a simplified model of the CNC in CAD to support the enclosure design work. I’ll link the file when it’s done, and will then sketch up some enclosure proposals.
I can be about Wed/Thu and Sat/Sun for a chat on what needs ti happen with the enclosure.
Please let mw know and we can meet at the space to discuss next steps?
I’ll be at the space most of Saturday / Sunday - if you let me know what times work, I’ll make sure to be there during.
Will also likely be there Thursday after work but that’s TBC.
Just a design/HS thought. If the enclosure ends up with a safety switch it would be good to have it possible to override that? Else as the mini-cnc it is really not possible to set up centering on round pieces with any accuracy with a wobbler or a dial micrometer mounted in the spindle if you can’t hand twist them around while adjusting X and Y.
Good point - do you have any pics of any previous parts you’ve machined with this setup? Just to help picture how it might work with the sieg
