Screw thread broken in laser for mirror

@lasertechs

Hi there,

I have just hopped on the laser machine and noticed the top left finger screw to the mirror was missing, it’s now been found, however it doesn’t screw in and appears to have de-threaded.

Please could a laser tech let me know whether it’s safe to use with one screw until a new one is used to secure it tightly?

Thank you,
Jacob

I seem to recall that it dethreaded before.
If you are able to secure the mirror with a small piece of tape, that should be OK.
Then leave a note on the lid saying that users shouldn’t attempt to clean the mirror.

I wouldn’t use it secured only with one screw.
If you can’t secure it with tape, please leave a note on the lid marking it out of order.

Either way, please let us know what you did.

Thanks

Assuming the screw won’t stay in, please tape it to the top of the laser PC so that we can find it.

The two screws are slightly different to each other - have you tried them in the opposite arrangement? I had this problem once before too but I’d just put them in the wrong way round

ill jet down and check it today/tomorrow

The threads in the head are knackered thanks to years of people over tightening the thumb screws - we have tried to extend its life as much as possible by tapping/new thubj screws etc etc but I think clearly its time for more drastic options

I managed to tighten it down with the slightly shorter thumbscrew on the back, needed to apply a little pressure before the threads would engage though so it’s definitely at risk of the threads going completely in the near future

Should be usable for now, just need to be very mindful when cleaning the mirror

May be worth tapping a couple of M4 holes and making up some new thumbscrews on the lathe, I’m sure that’s well within the abilities of someone here
