Sand blaster under repair

Hello all,

The sand blaster is currently under repair, and it does not have a lid.

My apologies for the disruption, I was supposed to put it all back together last night, but the design and cutting took way longer than expected, so I had to leave it.

It will be sorted asap (probably tonight).

On a related topic, the new lid will have a sacrificial piece of acrylic, designed to be quickly replaced. The laser cutting files will be uploaded to the sand blaster tool page, so in the future anyone can just cut and replace the sacrificial plate.

Awesome, thanks Stefano.

Im happy to cut a few replacement lids. I also think that clear sef adhesive vinyl would be really good at this.

What other works did you under take on the machine? I used it for a couple hours last thursday and it was really under powered

Nothing really…

A few weeks ago, I took it all apart and cleaned the inlet and the nozzle, and I sorted the kinked hose that stopped the media pickup.

Ever since, it seemed quite ok and was performing a lot better.

I used it on Saturday, and I didn’t notice any issue with it. (Although I used it for about 10 minutes only).

I know this is a silly question, but… was the compressor ON while you were using it? :squinting_face_with_tongue:

Yes, some clear film would help a lot I think.
I was thinking of trying some carpet protector (see below).

It’s not the most resistant material, but it is incredibly cheap, so it could be replaced almost after each use.

Regardless of any kind of coating, we need to start from an undamaged lid, so a new one was needed anyway.

I think that cutting replacements before they are needed could lead to waste of materials, if they go missing or if someone replaces them just because of a few light scratches.

Yeah I saw you replaced the kinked hose, thanks for that!

Yss compressor was on, I usually go and give it a reboot after 30 mins but you can defo tell when the pressure drops, I also wonder if the power of the blaster is affected if other people are using air powered devices at the same time?

Main issue is as usual, the media feed from the hopper doesn’t flow well and so you constantly have to stop to shuffle the media around, and because the lid was so cloudy you cant even really tell whats going on anyway :joy:

Roman also mentioned a few weeks back that the cyclone thing needs checking and emptying? HAs that been done yet? Happy to do so if not.

That carpet protrctor is too thin itll be a nightmarte to apply etc etc. I have loads of clear vinyl meant for vinyl cutting. But its nice and strong and robust, I think that would be a safe bet. and easy to apply/remove. Ill bring some in?

Well, the short answer is yes, it will be affected; it’s all the same system after all. But given the power of the compressor, I would be very surprised if the performance drop was noticeable in any way.

The issue with media pick up is endemic to that machine. is a design fault that I am not 100%sure how to solve, to be completely honest.

The cyclone has not been checked, but that would not impact the performance, only the dust extraction.

The unit originally came with protective film screens that you replace as they wear out. I am sure they all got lost or used up and now the lid is ruined.. but might be the way to go?

Just an example, no idea what size we need:

Great shout Andy, probably the best option tbh

Also can we pretty please purchase another grade of media? The current grade we have is very abrasive and damages aluminium.

GBAD Glass Bead Abrasive 100-200 micron - Medium grade this would be awesome to have

Is that £4.5 EACH sheet?

If that is the case, I think it is a bit too expensive!

even if its deployed for a month £4.50 is pretty good ROI for not destroying the lid instantly

Yes, probably per each… you can get them cheaper in bulk 3.50?

As for the hopper not functioning as intended… how about a dc motor mounted to the bottom with a weight offset on axis to act as a vibration device. We could use a timer to activate it every minute for five seconds or whatever suits the job?

I know it would probably not last too long, and I will get some more/easier way to protect the lid, but for now I would really call this A WIN
