Proposed Innovative Materials Event

Tags: #<Tag:0x00007fa499096b00>

Who would like to take part in a ninety minute to two hour session learning about new materials?

We would have two sessions one focuses on smart materials and the other augmented materials. You could attend either one or both if you’re interested.

The format would be introducing the group to between ten to fifteen materials for the first half an hour then going in depth on maybe two or three of those materials based on the what the group is interested in. Finally end with a design challenge to see if you understand the materials features and limitations. The goal is to teach you about these materials so you could potentially use them in your own work.

Why am I doing this? Currently I am researching for my PHD how creatives learn about radically innovative materials so we can improve the dissemination of materials to those who want to use them. While you’re leaning about materials I’m learning from you and you may be asked to fill in a quick questionnaire and do a short task but otherwise my research will mostly be based on observation.

If you’re interested please post below and if you want got to my website www.materialintuition.com and see some of the materials I have access to and if you’re coming down you can request I bring it along, I can’t guarantee I will as I share my material library with others who may be using the samples but I’ll try.

I’m very interested in this…

We’re also looking for interesting materials to clad the ‘messy’ workshop.

But these probably need to be commonly used sheet materials to be affordable.

Def interested! Please count me in.

Yep, interested.

@events - let’s get some dates sorted :slight_smile:

That’s a yes from you?

Yes yes yes

Interested. Love the idea of transparent wood (please excuse the euphemism).

Will this be members only? I have some teacher friends who might be interested. Might be another step towards recruiting them…

I think we give members a few days headstart then open it up to everyone, that’s worked before, and seems fair

If they can’t come down Rich I can always organise another day somewhere else, I’m looking to generate quite a bit of data.

So for dates how far in advance are we planning? What times work best with the space?

7.30 seems to be a good start time.

I’d give it a couple of weeks lead time if you can, so that we can spread the word.

Avoid regular events nights: Wednesday, Thursday, and Monday (when/if Monday night woodworking starts again). Monday fine for the next few weeks at any rate.

Send a message with a few optiond to @events and we’ll look at a good date. Alternatively you could start a poll…

Hi James,

Teacher friends very interested and could also supply bright sixth form students as well. How many do you like in a group?

James’ post says 10 to 15.

In phase 1 we found that 10 fits round the big table okay for a laptop-based workshop.

That’s all open to imaginative use of the space…

So dates I can run this event in the evening from 7.30 to latest 9.30 are listed below.
I plan on hosting two workshops and this would be the first, I know it’s all dates in May but at the moment I’m quite busy. If there are a lot of votes in this time I’ll try and run both workshops in this time frame.

I’m going with Dermot’s assessment that I can have at max ten people around the table and honestly that would make for a better workshop.

Let’s get a few more votes in here guys!

@James_Burchill there was clearly interest in this, however the poll didn’t seem to engage people.

If you’re still up for it then why not decide on a single date and see if we can get a group to form around that?

As we now have 3 workshop spaces you no longer have to avoid any particular evenings.
