Purchasing is not a problem, but someone needs to be responsible for taking delivery and bringing them to the space (or going to IKEA directly, if you live our Croydon way).
There’s also this deeper version:

They’re designed to hang between rails, which is neat. We could make our own with some ply and some thin strips
i would but i have funding issues
Sure, but can you take delivery and bring them to the space? Invoice and delivery address don’t have to be the same
What about some smaller as well?

The TROFAST stuff we bought before isn’t very large, I would suggest that we buy the 35 litre boxes from Herne Hill Builders they are bigger, see through and seem relatively good quality.
I spent quite a while looking at different types we can get a deal from the guy if we buy a number of them, he did 20 for £100.
FYI: The IKEA one’s do not include a lid, thats another £1.50 as I recall from last time.
Is another 50 p
Is 3.5 lid included
Well I don’t think that 6 liters are a big difference and for what I saw in the space the ikea one looks big enough
On the pro they can be inserted in the rail system!
Anyway is not a big deal, doesn’t really matter which one as far we have some!
I think the confusion is which size you are talking about, and their website isn’t clear as those 50p lids are for the other range that looks the same but is for table top storage, good perhaps for screws and that, but parts bins are cheaper I should imagine… Anyways storage boxes
IKEA TROFAST
Large (£3.50) + Lid (£1) = £4.50
Medium (£3) + Lid (£1) = £4
Small (£1.50) + Lid (£1) = £2.50
The issue is that while a few litres doesn’t seem much, after we bought the IKEA ones I realised they are just a bit too small on average for almost everything. The medium size ones I am suggesting are border line at times, but they are the standard
Well I have seen only one time of lid but anyway…
If you think they are small let’s get the local ones!
Only important thing on my opinion is that they must have a lid and must be stackable both full(with the lid on) and empty ( so they don’t take to much space when not in use)!
A completely personal opinion: I’m not keen on those Trofast boxes - the lids are weird and fiddly.
Ha, we had 20 lids and 20 boxes originally but yeah I know what you mean!
@stefanoromano lets have a look at this when you are next about, if stackable empty or with a lid is a requirement both meet it, if hanging them like TROFAST then I suspect it could be done with both, but it needs a closer look.
I also think we need to figure out what things need boxes as we’ve thrown boxes and boxes at the problem now and it’s not clear that it’s helping.
Someone put it right the other day, not sure who, maybe Sarah but the real issue is things need a labeled home.
I’ll be there later today
Sorry to be a voice of dissent but I’m not sure this is the answer, just because some tools are used for lots of different jobs.
So where does this pair of scissors go? Is it the UK upholstery scissors? Is it the dressmaking scissors?
If we have boxes that just contain the specialist tools, where do we draw the line?
good point.
but i think some logic can be applied.
normal scissors in the normal siccors holder.
upholstry siccors with the sewing stuff. [upholstry is not a recoginsed activity yet]
don’t know if that answers your question? and we’re only using one example that may not highlight some other points you have thought about. pleased to hear them.
any solution will be imperfect. but the proposals main objective is to not have tools lying around all over the place.
Nothing is permanent and storage boxes can always be put to other uses. I think it’s worth a go.
if we’re buying boxes is it worth thinking about containers for the smaller power tools?
sanders, skill saw etc.
is it worth having these in containers?
Tools in boxes on shelves take up more space than tools on shelves.
The boxes only make sense for well-defined groups of tools for a specific task.
Other storage solutions make better snse for general purpose tools.
Well Tom I disagree… I hate boxing the tools but tools in boxes on shelves actually take less space… If they are on boxes you can stack them… If not is kind of difficult to stack the plane on top of the skillsaw! We end up with a pile of junk difficult to use and to keep clean!
Anyway this is not a major issue, we have the boxes for almost all the small tools… We could try anytime…
Yours is a good point but I think that applying a bit of logic we can go round this problem…
Is just a matter of define categories and teach people how to recognise various tools! I.e. Masonry bit from woodbit!
