[Project Advice: Metalwork] Old mini keg into planter pot?

Howdy metal folk!

Question: Anyone have any advice regarding turning these into garden planters? Specifically any strong “do not do this because …” ?

I’ve got a handful of mini kegs rusting away in the garden. I keep telling the mrs that I want to turn them into planter pots. I’ve been put on notice to actually do so.

In my mind it’s (1) lop off the top with a hand grinder (cutting disk), (2) grind down the sharp edge a touch, (3) manually bash the rim inwards, rolling as best I can, to keep sharp away. ez pz, right? right?

Thanks in advance for your kind input

Have you tried a tin opener?

I’m 80% sure you’re joking, but now I’m curious to try it.

Sounds like a plan that should work (can opener aside) :joy:

It sounds like a joke but a can opener works an absolute charm on beer cans (or cola, etc.). It sort of pushes the top sheet out of the join and leaves you with a neat finished top and no sharp edges. I do this with empty cans and use them as an alternative to plastic cups at BBQs and parties. Quirky and better for the environment.

I think the mini-keg you have pictured might be a bit too heavy weight for this to work but if you have sturdy canopener a tentative try couldn’t hurt.
