Pledge Drive: Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Following the members’ meeting, we agreed that over the next month, we’d look to get members to contribute towards the cost, with the remainder met by members’ fees.

What is it?

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED), colloquially known as a Heart Restarter can help restart someone’s heart when they’ve collapsed in certain conditions.

It can be operated by anyone, no training is required, it’s fully automatic, and speaks out simple instructions on how to save someone’s life.

Where will it go?

The machine would be located inside Arch 1 and only available to the public when someone answers the door. Probably near the front door for visibility.

Who agreed to this?

You did. Members voted for this at the December and January meetings.

Which machine?

A machine will be selected, and different models exist, but ultimately, all do the same thing, with extra features like:

  • Single-piece pads to make it harder to place it wrong.
  • Included kit for removing clothing (scissors, etc…)
  • Pads include a compression sensor to guide you towards the ideal heart rate.

Why do we need an AED?

The nearest publically available AED is at the railway station at best several minutes away which would significantly affect the survival rates for someone who’s heart has stopped.

Why do we need a pledge drive

We want to offset the cost of the AED to ensure we’re not cutting into our reserves. Directors will meet the remaining cost.

Costs

Upfront

£1,100-1,700 for an AED. Costs may vary if we rent or buy, but servicing and maintenance costs be about £2,500 after 4 years.

Every little helps, here’s some idea of how many pledges we need at different levels:

  • 300 people @ £5 each
  • 150 people @ £10 each
  • 75 people @ £20 each
  • 30 people @ £50 each
  • 20 people @ £75 each
  • 15 people @ £100 each

Ongoing

These will be met by the space if we choose to buy, rentals are all inclusive.

Can’t we get a free machine from a scheme?

We’re not open or accessible 24x7. We’ve tried several schemes and have been rejected.

How do I pledge

Edit this post your name and amount below, after 6th March we’ll call on members to pay.

Sometimes if 2 people are editing at once your edit might get lost, so please double check it’s here, or post below as well.

We’re well over 10% of the way there, £200 so far and counting, can we get to 25% this week?

It is quite possibly my own ineptitude that is to blame, but I’m finding the revised UI of the Discourse forum awkward and a little confusing to navigate.

For e.g., this thread… although it is shown as being in Discussion: pledge-drive: I see no route to that section in index headings. The only way I can get to it is via the link in the Member’s Meeting thread in “Events’. Those sub-categories only appear to be made known in the ‘breadcrumbs’ in the header (and nowhere else?) once I’ve arrived at the thread.

Am I missing something fundamental in the way the forum is arranged; or, if others have the same issue, could this perhaps be why this pledge doesn’t seem to have much traction so far?

(I’m currently reading in Safari, if that is relevant.)

To the best of my knowledge those are tags. They’re used to describe and link topics across categories. Things like woodworking, cnc, laser-cutting

90% they were there before the upgrade.

The category for this topic is just Discussion

FWIW: if you start searching for a tag, I think you get a pop up that will let you see all posts related to that tag

Me too ,

We’re up to 21%, £325 so far, thanks so much for everyone who’s donated so far, and keep it up, imagine if we could fund half of this AED by the end of the month.
