Planer Thicknesser

Just thinking about getting tools up and running, as far as i am aware before the thicknesser is able to be used we need a safe way of moving it in and out of its position to allow full length pieces of wood to be passed through it

here are my thoughts

rails :- not practical, trip hazard/dust and debris collectors.

fixed lockable castors :- need quite a few to hold the weight (500KG) and if they are the spinning type will allow good positioning but awkward when reversing (as they spin round.)

proper moving equipment:-

these are small furniture movers £322 a pair, will manage the planer thicknesser but look to me like they will have to be placed front and back of the machinery to move

£550 same issue with the above but an 1800kg limit

Due to the shape of these I think both will be impractical for out purposes.

Finally a lifting system such as this

6000KG limit. £286

we would also need a pair of toe jacks
https://www.liftingequipmentstore.com/product/raptor-2-000kg-industrial-toe-jack
2x £174 =£348
and https://www.liftingequipmentstore.com/product/steerman-rpb-roller-pinch-bars
£92

Total for lifting system £726 +shipping

These are new prices and I am sure we can source any of these second hand for a lot cheaper.

But i propose that the last option is the most useful, not only for getting the thicknesser into use. but would have been dead handy for moving the other tools into place without injury, will allow us to easily redesign the placings of the machinery if we find that the current one is lacking somewhere.

one system which basically allows all of our heavy machinery to be easily moved. and make moving the metal lathe into the space a lot easier.

Good thoughts.

I might be naive here so shoot me down if need be, but what about fitting feet (multiple, to spread the load) and using a pallet truck? Might be a more versatile piece of equipment when it comes to moving large things around?

See there is the reason I need to keep my posts shorter!
and a pallet truck is a great idea, only issue I can think of with that, is removing the pallet truck when the thicknesser is brought forward. as the controls are at the front, unless of course there is enough room to store it rotated at 90 degrees then it wouldn’t be a problem

That’s what I did in my workshop.

Those look really nice. I wonder how the floor surface would cope with 125kg point loads rolling around on it though… (not concerned about strength, just denting the surface)

Diy air casters was the plan

Evening @woodtechs. Is the planer thicknesses back in action? I’ve a hankering to plane and thickness me some wood.

Heya. Latest attempt to fix it will be Friday (I’m reasonably hopeful we’ll manage it).
I too have a hankering to plane/thickness some wood (and an overdue storage request…)

Will the jointer function be active as well?

It will.
