Orbital sander not working

I found the orbital sander today with this sign on it.

Not sure how long it has been out of service.

Please if you find anything not working in the woodshop please post on discourse and tag the @woodtechs

Things will
Not get repaired/ replaced if we don’t know about it

Hi, Me and Daniel saw this earlier in the week , plugged it in and it worked fine so the only question me and Daniel have is what is not working on it ???

It is intermittent, I suspect the brushes have gone, but I didn’t have time to look at it

Does anyone know if this has been fixed yet?

I just checked it now and not working. @woodtechs — how do we get this fixed? Happy to help if I can.

I’ve just been reading up - mark reckoned it was the brushes (annoyingly they claim those aren’t user serviceable so it’s not something we can pop open and check easily).

I’m ordering a batch of spares for the hand tools this week, I’ll include some aftermarket brushes for that sander and faultfind it properly this weekend.

Hi, just wondering if you managed to get to this over the weekend? (No worries if not!)

Happy to loan a pretty cheap (but functional) sander if that would help. Can drop it off at the space tomorrow. Worth noting though that it doesn’t have a compatible hoover attachment, unsure of that would be an issue.

@woodtechs the sander doesn’t seem to be working still. Any chance we can get it fixed or replaced please? :folded_hands:

Hi Charlie - we’ve had it apart since my last post to see if it was fixable and are looking for a new one.

Max previously handled purchasing for the woodtechs and we’re in the process of handing that over now he’s a director, so as soon as that’s done we should be able to order this and other spares. Apologies for the delay!

No worries and thank you!

Still happy to lend a sander as a temporary fix - as said though, it doesn’t have a vacuum attachment (imagine it would be easy to print one though). Will defer to woodtechs, I can drop off if they are keen.

Do we have a replacement for this currently?

@CriticalTolerance - do you know what part(s) it needs? Is it a purchasing issue or diagnosis issue?

Thanks!

Hi all - purchasing issue (I also stripped the sander down in the meantime to see if there was a temporary fix).

Max and I think the purchasing side is set up now, I have some time this week to look at getting this and a few other safety-related bits.

Side note for anyone else looking to use the orbital sander: the compressed air powered one works fine and is actually fantastic, way better than the out of action electric one

Turns out there’s a reason various people swear by pneumatic disk sanders over electric

Amazing – where is it stored?

on a holder on the wall above/behind the big drum sander

It’s on the wall behind the big drum sander, and plugs into the red compressed air hose by the CNC

Not sure but does the air one have dust extraction?
If not I am afraid it has to be taken out of use
