I have a few gouges I’m looking to handle, and while I could use the lathe I’ve always liked the tapered octagon handles I find on some vintage chisels. These all have pretty similar dimensions and are quick to knock up if you don’t have a lathe too.
I had a piece of London Plane so decided to go fancy. Squaring up the stock was no problem (awkward grain aside) and then I tapered the piece, but I realised that not having access to a leg vice anymore means I don’t have a convenient way to hold the tapered piece by its edges, so I quickly dug through the scrap bin and found these convenient offcuts for a jig. This is also going to be useful for holding small parts for future projects…
I’ll post pictures of the finished chisel when I’m done. Pleased with how it’s coming along but I miss having my old workbench…
