Mini CNC touch plate

Looking at adding a 3 axis touch plate to the mini CNC, so we can get repeatable and accurate coordinates.

I’ve had a look at the manual, and nothing is immediately obvious to me that this is something we can do (but this is entirely outside my expertise).

Here are a couple of videos of what I have in mind

@CNCtechs any opinions on whether this is doable?

We already have it, it needs to be setup.
It’s in our list

I think we have just a z probe but once that’s going, we can do 3 axis. I’m partial to an all metal version similar to the second video. SMEE has a surface grinder if we want to get really crazy but most projects won’t necessarily benefit. Note that x/y touch off is sensitive to tool diameter.

I will say, I have stuck a multi meter inside the machine to check fixture alignment. The machine will accurately report its absolute positive in machine coordinates (G53) so you can do the same work manually and get good repeatability. Obviously automatic is nice to have.

I am of the opinion, that if we’re going to bother doing it, then we should do it to the best of our abilities.

I’ve got another block of aluminium arriving tomorrow that I would be happy to use for this.

I would only need help with the wiring into the cnc.

As far as taking the diameter of the cutting tool into account, you can include this (and the whole touch it ff operation) in the gcode.

I assume this is the grinder the SMEE have?

The linuxcnc setup is more complicated for 3 axes but we’ll manage

I’m no longer a cnctech but I assume they’d appreciate the hardware if you want to machine it! Make sure to relieve the inside corner of the pocket.

A surface grinder is a bit different than a jig grinder. Surface grinders do super accurate flat/parallel grinds if you coax it out of them.

I misunderstood the purpose… Go for it!
