Hi wonderful Metaltechs. I’ve been doing some MIG welding today but the wire feed has jammed. I turned it all off and looked inside the side cover but I can’t see a tangle and there’s plenty of wire on the spool so I’ve left it for someone who knows what to do.
Thanks for letting us know Vanda.
Sorry you had a problem. I plan to be in later today and will take a look.
.
I always bring something else to do - just in case! I don’t think the MIG problrm is at the welding tip.
Hi Dave. A member has unjammed it. It was the tip.
Ok. Good. Thanks for letting me know. Glad you got it going again. I’ll try and look into the cause when I have a mo.
Hiya, it was me.
Although I got it working ok, I experienced the same issues someone yesterday had with the wire not wanting to behave while welding.
Ofc we might just need more practice, but worth mentioning.
In addition I have a request; could we replace the inner ring in my picture? It’s undersize and this lets grinding discs vibrate and wobble in a mildly terrifying manner.
I’ll have a look at that as well this evening and get back to you Ben. Odd. That washer (ring) is made for that grinder. It has flats and goes on in one particular orientation. If it’s not fitted correctly it will wobble and makes the grinder very dangerous. Thanks for doing the right thing and mentioning it. ![]()
That may have been me - definitely had some issues getting a consistent arc yesterday afternoon. I was also a bit under the weather so just put it down to that.
Thinking about it though, I helped the person before me replace a fused/jammed tip and just picked the first one I found in the drawer - wonder if I could have picked up a tip intended for a different wire diameter by mistake?
The issues I had felt kind of like a bad ground connection (but was also weirdly intermittent) so I suppose a slightly oversized tip would cause the same kind of problems with intermittent contact between the wire and the tip?
Don’t give it a second thought @chris_c . We’ll take a good look at everything.
Have checked the grinder and its washer @Afro_ben . That is the correct part. See the picture. There are two flats on the washer that locate on the spindle. They need to be properly seated. I think this is why you might have struggled. Don’t hesitate to reach out should you have further difficulties.
Or maybe put the locking nut on upside down?
