Metal Casting

I haven’t been able to find any previous topics on this subject, but forgive me if this is a repost.

I’d like to try some small scale metal casting – probably pewter. Rings, coins, little things. Do we have a melter and tools for this sort of work? Can anyone advise me in making some high-temperature silicone moulds?

You can cast pewter in laser cut MDF moulds with acrylic inserts.

We have talked about this stuff endlessly.

To sum up.

1 the extract is more than good enough
2 gas is to complex the lease ect
3 the space is made from wood and pvc so fire risk has to be controlled
4 RA have to be thought about.

I think that is a fair summary of the debate so far

I spent a good five minutes searching the archives for topics pertaining specifically to casting metal, but couldn’t find anything.

From what Joe says, it sounds like most of the conversation has been about gas flames. I guess I was asking after something like an electric melter pot:

Do any members have something like this I might borrow to try a couple things out? Or could I request/propose one for the space? They don’t seem to be particularly expensive.

You could probably melt pewter with a plumber’s blowlamp. It doesn’t really need a fancy extractor - probably much safer than soldering with leaded solder.

I’d be interested in pitching into a pledge!
