Mango Wood Coffee Table Question

Hi All,

I want to make a small coffee table (55x55cm), and ideally it needs to coordinate well with my tv stand which is made from mango wood (please see attached).

I want to do this ASAP (within a few days), but sourcing planed mango wood is super difficult.

Does anyone know if I can pick any other hardwood and just stain it with something specific?

I’d look and see if veneered MDF/ply is available, or even just veneers if you’re sent on mango. I don’t have much experience with stains, but I do know if you go that route you should do some color testing first

Thanks a lot Max!

Hi Mike,

Have you looked at Surrey Timbers? They tend to have mango wood in stock and might even plane it on request as I know they supply other timber to specified dimensions. https://www.surreytimbers.co.uk/product/wild-mango-timber-14-25/

Also give Fallen and Felled a try, they may have some.

I imagine you want to use something similar to the look of the gain in the mango wood as well as the colour? I’m unsure of a timber that is similar grain, oak or ash could be a shot with a Rubio stain as a test to see how it comes out colour wise?
Rubio Monocoat

Hope this is of any help!

Thanks a lot Charlie!

Update: mango veneer turned out to be a even rarer beast to find, but after my search I stumbled onto these bad boys made of mango wood on eBay:

Picked these up yesterday evening for about 1/5 of what timber would cost me :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Made a mistake of showing these to my girlfriend and now it looks like I absolutely have to save at least the little one

Will try to cut the big one along the black lines and see if I can quickly turn it into my own table!

Nice one man, you’ll be able to get some decent timber out of them no doubt!

Thanks! It turned out to be infested with nails though, so I had to use hand tools to dismantle it all the way!

Got my glue-up sorted:

Can I ask anyone to help me with drum sander today to flatten this if possible, please?

Pleased don’t drum sand things that have been oiled, or varnished.

The top looks excellent!!

Thanks Paul! Yep, everything was scraped before I put it through the drum sander :slightly_smiling_face:

Now it looks like this:
